Tua beware: Quinn Ewers sends bold statement as he looks to steal the starting job in Miami

Quinn Ewers’ journey to the NFL took an unexpected turn when he slipped to the seventh round of the 2025 draft, where the Miami Dolphins selected him with the 231st overall pick. The former University of Texas quarterback, once projected as a higher-round selection, was the last of 14 quarterbacks taken-a reality that left him visibly disappointed. “I didn’t expect to fall as low as I did,” Ewers admitted, but he remains focused on proving himself at the next level.

Despite making 36 starts and winning 27 games during his college career, Ewers finds himself behind established quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson on Miami’s depth chart. His immediate challenge will be learning head coach Mike McDaniel’s complex offensive system, which places a premium on timing, precision, and decision-making. While his experience running a structured system at Texas could ease the transition, the leap to the NFL comes with new obstacles.

Ewers, however, welcomes the competition. “There’s a lot of guys out there right now, and everyone’s fighting for the same job,” he said. He understands the importance of earning his place, not just on the roster but in the trust of his teammates and coaches. His ability to absorb the playbook and refine his mechanics will determine how quickly he can compete for meaningful snaps.

The plan is clear in South Florida

Miami’s decision to draft Ewers reflects their long-term strategy. While Tagovailoa remains the starter, the Dolphins are ensuring depth at the position. McDaniel praised Ewers’ ability to operate an offense with motion and timing-skills that align with Miami’s system. If Ewers can translate his collegiate success into efficient play at the professional level, he could develop into a valuable asset for the franchise.

Ewers’ draft slide was surprising, especially given his strong college production and decision to forego an $8 million NIL deal to enter the draft. He bet on himself by leaving Texas early, believing he was ready for the next challenge. Now, he must prove that gamble was worth it by adapting to the demands of the NFL.

With rookie minicamp underway, Ewers is eager to make an impression. Whether he rises through the ranks or remains a developmental prospect, his mindset suggests he’s ready for the challenge ahead. His story is just beginning, and his response to adversity will define the next stage of his career.
