Tsitsipas’ hole: “I’ve been through trauma”

Stefanos Tsitsipas is still stuck in a tunnel. The Greek tennis player has not managed to regain the level that made him one of the best tennis players in the world. However, he does not give up and works, technically and mentally, to return to his best version. In this search, Tsitsipas has opened up to the media in statements prior to his participation in the Davis Cup with Greece.

Stress due to injury

“I’m dealing with my injury, trying to find a way to heal myself, consulting with many specialists and doing everything I can to really understand what’s going on with me. In the training sessions before the US Open I was fine, but as soon as I started competing, the problems came back. I feel a lot of stress and anxiety, I think that influences, as well as the distrust in my tennis that I feel having not won almost matches in recent months.”

An ordeal without solution

“I feel better physically than I did two or three weeks ago. The US Open was tough for me because I went out on court with a lot of doubts as to whether I could finish my first match. I experienced very negative thoughts because I expected to be much better from the back injury. With Altmaier I needed medical attention on two occasions and the truth is that I’ve had weeks in which many unpleasant things have happened to me that people have no idea about.”

Mental health

“To enter a match and feel discomfort immediately is something that destroys me mentally. I have been dedicating a lot of effort and working countless hours to recover. Mentally, to see that you are not fit to compete after all that, destabilizes me deeply. I have been through a trauma lately and I cannot promise too much about what I can do in this Davis Cup tie.”

Staying away from social media is a matter of health, I want to inspire other young people

Social media

“I want to break away from social media, I used it as a refuge to escape from all the stress I’ve been feeling from my injury and I found myself spending hours with my mobile phone, watching videos. Staying away from them is a matter of mental health, I want to inspire other young people to do the same.”
