Troy Aikman meets who he considers the GOAT and it’s not Tom Brady, but a legend from the team that was his greatest rival

Troy Aikman, the Dallas Cowboys legend and three-time Super Bowl champion, found a moment of joy amid a tough week by reconnecting with his all-time favorite quarterback, Joe Montana. On Thursday, Aikman shared an Instagram story capturing their reunion at Nobu Malibu, a Japanese restaurant in California.

In the photo, Aikman, dressed casually in a black tee and quilted jacket, stood beside Montana, who lived up to his “Joe Cool” nickname in a black button-up with white patterns, flashing a warm smile. Aikman’s caption-“Ran into a (goat emoji) last night“-left no doubt: Montana remains the greatest quarterback in his eyes.

Aikman’s admiration for Montana isn’t new. Back in 2014 on the Dan Patrick Show, he named the San Francisco 49ers icon the most dynamic quarterback ever, no stats needed. “I saw him do it on the biggest stage, in the biggest moments,” Aikman said, praising Montana’s ability to lead his team through pressure.

With 32 fourth-quarter comebacks, Montana earned his “Comeback Kid” title, thriving when the game was on the line. That clutch legacy resonates with Aikman, who has often cited Montana as the gold standard, even while admiring modern stars like Joe Burrow and supporting Tom Brady in his ventures.

Joe Cool meets Mr. Clutch

This reunion came at a poignant time for Aikman. The week had been heavy with loss. On May 21, he mourned the passing of George Wendt, the beloved Cheers actor who played Norm, sharing a heartfelt “RIP Norm” on Instagram. Earlier, Aikman quietly supported former teammate Terrell Owens, who lost his high school coach, Gary Jackson Powell, on May 15. Owens’ emotional post about saying goodbye to his mentor touched Aikman, who showed his support by liking the tribute.

Meeting Montana offered Aikman a much-needed lift. The two Hall of Famers, whose careers defined NFL excellence-Montana with four Super Bowls and Aikman with three-shared a moment of camaraderie that reminded fans of their shared greatness. For Aikman, now 58 and a prominent ESPN broadcaster, this encounter was a chance to reflect on the legends who inspired him. As he navigates life’s highs and lows, from personal losses to professional challenges, connecting with Montana proved to be a bright spot, a reminder of the timeless bonds football creates.
