Troy Aikman joins Dolphins in consultant role, eyes influence like Tom Brady

Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback and former Dallas Cowboys star, has taken on a new role with the Miami Dolphins that mirrors, in some ways, Tom Brady‘s position with the Las Vegas Raiders.

While Aikman does not hold ownership stakes like Brady, his involvement as a special consultant is designed to provide the Dolphins with a competitive edge by sharing insights drawn from his deep league knowledge.

“I think the Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league and knowing that I have information that they don’t have or can’t get,” Aikman told Clarence Hill Jr. on the DLLS Dallas Cowboys Podcast.

“And I think they were smart in taking advantage of that, whether it was through me or through somebody else.”

Aikman, who also serves as a national analyst on ESPN‘s Monday Night Football, is positioned to offer the Dolphins unique perspectives on players, coaching strategies, and league trends.

While Brady’s role with the Raiders grants him access to production meetings and team strategy discussions despite his restrictions, Aikman acknowledged that his own influence in Miami may not be as extensive.

“It’s kind of scratched that itch, but, you know, I don’t have any ownership,” Aikman said. “I don’t have the influence, if you will, that Tom seemingly has there with the Raiders. So it looks similar, but, I’m not so sure that is.”

Shaping the Dolphins’ front office and future roster

Officially listed as a “special consultant,” Aikman played a role in helping the Dolphins find their new general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, who quickly hired former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as head coach.

“And I think they hired two really talented, wonderful people, and I think that’s going to prove itself out,” Aikman said. “But, yeah, I’m pulling for them. I want to see them do well because I feel like my fingerprints are on it as well.”

The Dolphins face significant roster challenges heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, holding the 11th overall pick.

After the release of Tyreek Hill and the trade of Jaylen Waddle, Miami has pressing needs at wide receiver and defensive positions, including the line and secondary.

Aikman’s football acumen may play a role in shaping decisions to strengthen these areas.

“I’ll continue to help in ways that are yet to be defined,” Aikman said.

“I think all franchise quarterbacks that have been in the league for any length of time come out thinking we could run a team, and know what it takes. Certainly having been part of championship teams, I know what the locker room feels like and what a winning locker room should be like.”

While his exact duties remain undefined, Aikman’s presence gives the Dolphins both credibility and expertise as they navigate the draft, free agency, and roster construction.

For a team seeking to regain relevance in the AFC East, the guidance of a three-time Super Bowl winner could prove invaluable.
