Trey Smith may be one of the most underappreciated stars along the Kansas City Chiefs‘ offensive line, but the sixth-round steal from the 2021 NFL Draft has carved out a vital role in one of football’s most dominant dynasties.
As the protector of superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Smith has seen the magic up close and even he’s still stunned by what his quarterback can do.
Since entering the league, Smith has become a force in the trenches. Last season, the former Tennessee standout was exceptional in pass protection, finishing the year with an impressive 78.8 grade from Pro Football Focus and-perhaps most importantly-not allowing a single sack on Mahomes.
Humanly impossible
His efforts helped anchor a line that gave Mahomes time to extend plays, throw on the move, or work his signature off-script improvisation.
In a recent appearance on the New Rory and Mal podcast, Smith pulled back the curtain on what it’s really like to block for Mahomes-not just in the games, but during practices, when the quarterback’s creativity truly shines.
“Honestly, the stuff that you guys don’t see in practice is what will blow your mind the most,” Smith said. “Nonchalant around the back, under the leg, just crazy stuff that he does that’s just like, when you rewind it, you’re like ‘man, he really did just throw that perfectly’.”
Mahomes is already widely considered one of the most talented quarterbacks in NFL history. But Smith’s comments emphasize something fans often forget-how much of Mahomes’ brilliance is routine at Chiefs practices, not just on Sundays.
“That’s the cool thing about Pat, man, he can do some things that, like, before I got to the Chiefs, I didn’t know were humanly possible,” Smith added. “He’s just got that it-factor, man. Like watching him from the line, sometimes I catch myself being a fan-just watching him cook.
“There’s probably not enough good things I could say about Pat. One thing I could say is that he gifted me one of the most valuable possessions: two Rolex watches, he got us a golf cart, club cart fully tricked out, all new golf clubs, Oakley sunglasses. The list goes on and on and on.”
