Trey Lance signs one-year deal with Chargers worth up to $6.2 million

Quarterback Trey Lance is getting another shot in the NFL-this time with the Los Angeles Chargers. After a rocky start to his pro career, the former No. 3 overall pick has agreed to a one-year deal reportedly worth up to $6.2 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

While full contract details remain under wraps, it’s clear that Lance’s compensation will be tied to performance and playing time-two things that have been hard to come by since he entered the league in 2021.

A career still waiting to take off

Lance’s journey has been anything but smooth. Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with high expectations, he spent his rookie season mostly on the sidelines before suffering a season-ending ankle injury just two games into 2022. He was later traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, where he served as the team’s third-string quarterback and didn’t see any regular-season action.

His only on-field opportunity came in relief last season, making one appearance and one start after Dak Prescott went down. Despite flashes of potential, Lance hasn’t had the consistent reps needed to truly showcase his abilities.

Still behind the scenes-for now

The quarterback depth chart in Los Angeles is already stacked. Justin Herbert remains the undisputed starter, and Taylor Heinicke is locked in as the primary backup. That puts Lance in a familiar role: waiting in the wings. However, this new opportunity with the Chargers could serve as a pivotal moment for the 24-year-old to reset and prove he still belongs in the league.

Even if he doesn’t see the field much in 2025, Lance will have the chance to learn behind one of the league’s top quarterbacks and potentially earn a longer-term role depending on his development and how the season unfolds.

With the physical tools that once made him a top-three pick still intact, Trey Lance’s future is far from written. The move to Los Angeles may not guarantee playing time-but it could be the right environment to finally unlock his potential. For now, he’s got a new team, a new deal, and one more chance to make it work.
