Trey Lance News: Chargers finalize $6.75M deal to bring back dual-threat QB

The Los Angeles Chargers are bringing back quarterback Trey Lance on a one-year deal worth up to $6.75 million, ensuring the former first-round selection remains a key part of the team’s depth chart for the 2026 season.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter first reported the agreement Saturday afternoon, noting that the 25-year-old signal-caller will return to Los Angeles after serving as a developmental and situational asset during the previous campaign.

Lance enters his fifth NFL season following a 2025 campaign where he appeared in four games, replacing Justin Herbert.

While his passing production was modest-totaling 226 yards with a 47.4% completion rate and a 50.8 passer rating-his mobility proved to be a valuable tool in specialized packages.

The dual-threat quarterback rushed for 85 yards on just 17 carries last season, averaging a healthy five yards per attempt.

Continuity for a Playoff Contender

His most significant contribution came in the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos; despite a 19-3 loss, Lance showcased his versatility by throwing for 136 yards and rushing for 69.

The decision to retain Lance provides the Chargers with vital continuity at the quarterback position. The team is coming off a successful 11-6 season that saw them reach the postseason as a wild-card entry.

Their run ultimately ended in a 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots, who went on to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. By keeping Lance in the fold, Los Angeles ensures they have a backup who is already deeply familiar with the offensive system.

Looking ahead to 2026

As the team prepares for the 2026 training camp, Lance is expected to continue his development while providing a high-upside insurance policy behind the starter.

With the quarterback room stabilizing, the Chargers’ front office continues to navigate a busy offseason. By securing Lance before the heat of spring workouts, Los Angeles maintains a mobile depth option capable of stepping in for situational roles or injury relief as they aim for another deep playoff run.
