Trevon Diggs’ return sparks hope and big questions for Dallas Cowboys

Trevon Diggs clearing his physical and coming off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list should have been an unambiguous boost for the Cowboys. Yet, instead of unmitigated relief, it’s triggered a new wave of uncertainty.

With week 1 fast approaching against Philadelphia, his physical, mental, and tactical readiness remains under intense scrutiny, exposing the thin margins in NFL roster decisions.

Diggs is cleared, but not guaranteed

Passing the physical is a major milestone, but not a touchdown. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer applauded Diggs for his rehab work with Britt Brown and confirmed his return to the active roster. Still, there’s no definitive assurance he’ll suit up for the opener.

Diggs himself gave a telling, noncommital response when asked about week 1:

Maybe, maybe not

His focus now is on ramping up live practice reps to gauge readiness properly. Despite improving, missing offseason work has already cost him $500,000, highlighting tension between individual rehab decisions and organizational expectations.

Dallas’ shaky secondary

Without Diggs, Dallas’ cornerback depth is fragile. Kaiir Elam has earned attention, and veterans DaRon Bland (who excelled in 2023) and Andrew Booth are in play. But if Diggs delays his return beyond week 1, the Cowboys may need to pursue outside help or rely on unproven bodies.

The uncertainty isn’t just about personnel, it could shape the team’s early season trajectory. A confident Diggs return would solidify a turnaround-leading secondary. However, a tentative or delayed comeback risks eroding defensive consistency and stretching the lineup thin.
