This past Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the Dallas Cowboys released one of the last remaining stars of their secondary, cornerback Trevon Diggs. The news shocked many, but behind the decision, there is a significant analysis explaining why the team chose to part ways with his services.
Trevon Diggs is a two-time All-Pro and has become a key leader within the Cowboys’ defense. However, this year was plagued by injuries, and his performance declined noticeably; this was one of the main reasons behind his release from the team.
Diggs still has time remaining on the $97 million contract extension he signed in 2023. With his departure from the Lone Star team, there will surely be several franchises interested in adding him as a free agent who could potentially join any organization.
There is, however, one important detail that remains relevant for what is left of the current season, which consists of just one game. The Cowboys would still have to pay him
Diggs has no guaranteed money left in his contract, meaning that starting next season any other franchise could pursue him without major complications and begin a new chapter with him.
A very uneven 2025 season for Trevon Diggs
Trevon Diggs played in the first six games of the 2025 season without major issues. Then a knee injury occurred; he returned, suffered a concussion at home, came back again, and once more injured his knee.
After a great deal of noise surrounding his situation, he was able to return in Week 16 and appeared in that game as well as the following one in Week 17. Diggs entered the NFL with the Cowboys in 2020 and quickly became an important piece for Dallas, so much so that the team rewarded him with a multimillion-dollar contract extension.
In 2021, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection, a season in which he became the cornerback with the highest number of interceptions in the league. Unfortunately for him, in 2023 he suffered a torn ACL and, since then, has been unable to return to his peak level.
Now that he has been released from the Lone Star team, there are several organizations where he could land and make a significant contribution.
Washington Commanders
The Commanders’ head coach, Dan Quinn, served as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023, so he knows Trevon Diggs perfectly, and he could be a strong addition to his defense.
This familiarity could be a major factor in Diggs heading to the nation’s capital and helping Quinn rebuild his team for the 2026 season.
Chicago Bears
As with the Commanders, Diggs has connections here as well. In this case, it is with Al Harris, the defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator, who was Dallas’ defensive backs coach prior to this season.
If the Bears decided to bring him in, he would have more opportunities to continue playing, as they would be headed to the postseason.
New England Patriots
Here, the bond is a family one, as his brother Stefon is a key part of the team, albeit on offense. For now, however, he has other matters to worry about.
Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis have done a good job for the surprising Patriots in 2025, but when it comes to depth there are notable shortcomings, and this is where Diggs could step in to help.
San Francisco 49ers
They are close to reaching the top of the NFC in the final game of the season. They look solid, but their pass defense has struggled. Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears managed to throw for 330 yards against them. Acquiring Diggs would add significant strength to their secondary, and given the many injuries they have suffered, his addition would be very welcome.
Lastly, another team that could be an option is the Green Bay Packers. He would reunite with his close friend Micah Parsons, despite Parsons being injured, and their familiarity could make Diggs a valuable acquisition for the team.
