Travis Kelce’s retirement is a fact; a contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs for Taylor Swift’s boyfriend is almost impossible

There’s no doubt that Travis Kelce is coming off a very rough 2024, where he did not show the explosiveness his fans had been accustomed to, and criticism quickly arose over whether he was no longer focused on his NFL career-where, in the future, he will surely be a Hall of Famer thanks to his standout moments with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Also, perhaps we’ve been unfair to him, because at 35 years old he’s already accumulated wear and tear, and his position as a tight end is one of heavy contact, so obviously he can’t perform as before. In terms of numbers, last season he had 97 receptions, 823 yards, and only 3 touchdowns.

Those numbers are the worst of his career since 2014; in fact, since that season, he had always surpassed 1,000 yards. Nothing lasts forever, and it seems we might be seeing the last of Travis Kelce as a professional.

The situation that could lead Travis Kelce to retire in 2025

After the beating that the Philadelphia Eagles gave the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, one of the players singled out was Travis Kelce. The tight end was heavily criticized, and some even called for his retirement, but Patrick Mahomes convinced him to return in 2025. However, it seems this could be his final season.

The team is in negotiations with cornerback Trent McDuffie for a contract extension, which would complicate Kelce’s future with the Chiefs. At first glance, this situation might not seem to affect Kelce, but retaining the tight end in the future could be very difficult.

According to Spotrac, the Chiefs are projected to be more than $51 million over the salary cap next season-and that’s without McDuffie’s extension. McDuffie is an elite cornerback and will surely seek a salary befitting that status.

So the only option for Travis Kelce would be to renegotiate and take a pay cut, something that seems very unlikely, which is why it’s probable that 2025 will be Taylor Swift’s boyfriend’s final year in the NFL.
