Travis Kelce’s future hangs in the balance as Chiefs front office remains noncommittal

Everyone wants to know what Travis Kelce is going to do when it comes to his football future. While everything has pointed to the legendary tight end returning for at least one more season in the NFL, there has been no confirmation from the Kansas City Chiefs player or the team yet.

Head coach Andy Reid gave Chiefs fans plenty of hope last week, when he expressed optimism by saying there’s been “communication” between Kelce and the team regarding a potential new contract. A few days later, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke to the media and echoed a similar sentiment, but made no promises to fans.

Brett Veach says Chiefs want plan in place whether Travis Kelce returns or retires

Veach is currently in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and he was naturally asked about Kelce’s situation. It doesn’t seem like either party is in that much of a rush to iron out the details of his return. In fact, he made it clear that “we’re trying to position ourselves where either way, we have a plan moving forward.” So if Kelce decides to retire, the front office wants to be ready for that potential situation with a plan in place.

I’m sure we’re going to see [Kelce’s agent] here – just like we will all the other players’ agents – and we’ll continue that dialogue. But Travis is the best. He’s an icon. Hopefully, he comes back and we’ll just kind of let that process play out. You need some sort of deadline. But at the same time, it’s Travis Kelce. So we’re just going to continue to have positive dialogue and see where this thing ends.

Kelce seemingly wants to come back. Reid wants him back. The front office wants him back. Patrick Mahomes wants him back. But as nearly everyone involved has mentioned, it’s a process that needs to play out first.

Kelce’s mind could possibly change in the coming days, weeks or months, but he wants to finish his NFL career in a better way than he did in 2025. That will mean hammering out a contract, which comes with financial negotiations and minute details; especially given the Chiefs’ salary cap situation.
