A few hours before Kansas City‘s last game of the season, the club’s social media released a video showing Travis Kelce taking to the field on Sunday in Las Vegas amid speculation that this could be the last time he plays an NFL game.
The Kansas City Chiefs have already been eliminated from playoff contention, turning their Week 18 road matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders into a dead rubber.
For Kelce, now 36, the timing has only intensified speculation that the end of a remarkable 13 season career may be near.
Kelce has spent his entire NFL journey with the Chiefs since being drafted in 2013, winning three Super Bowls and establishing himself as one of the most accomplished tight ends the game has ever seen.
Even as Kansas City unraveled this season and missed the postseason, he remained productive, finishing with 839 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Kelce’s contract situation
What makes this moment feel different is what comes next. Kelce‘s contract expires at the end of the season, and there has been no public indication that a new deal is coming.
Around the league, many believe this is the natural point for him to step away, especially given his age and the physical toll of more than a decade in the NFL.
Off the field, Kelce‘s life is also entering a new chapter. He is engaged to Taylor Swift, with reports suggesting the couple plan to marry on June 13 at the Ocean House in Rhode Island, close to Swift‘s property in the northeastern United States.
That personal milestone has only fueled theories that Kelce could choose to retire rather than push through another grueling season.
Swift‘s presence this weekend has become part of the conversation as well. She has not attended a Chiefs road game since Kansas City‘s playoff win in Buffalo in January 2024.
If she were to make the trip for a meaningless regular season finale, many would view it as a quiet signal that this game carries more weight than the standings suggest.
Kelce weighs motivation and the moment he will know it is time
For his part, Kelce has avoided definitive statements.
He has said he plans to reflect once the season ends and speak with the Chiefs, along with friends and family, before making any decision. One thing he has been clear about is that he would not play for another team.
The retirement discussion surfaced earlier this year after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. Kelce appeared close to walking away then but ultimately decided he did not want to end his career on a loss.
In an emotional Christmas Day interview with fellow franchise legend Tony Gonzalez, Kelce spoke candidly about the uncertainty surrounding his future.
“I think I’m still searching for those answers,” Kelce said.
“Obviously the way this one ended with a sour taste in my mouth. I feel motivated but I’ve got to make the right decision for myself.
“Just the fact that when I know it’s over, it’s over. I still have a lot of love for this game. If I came back it would be just to answer that flame in my heart for this thing.”
