The secret to one of the most prolific partnerships in NFL history may not be found in the film room, but rather at the 19th hole.
During a recent episode of the New Heights podcast, veteran tight end Travis Kelceshared rare insight into the “telepathic” connection he shares with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
According to the 36-year-old star, their ability to improvise in high-pressure moments is a direct result of the hours they spend together away from the gridiron.
Kelce described a “natural understanding of backyard football” that allows him to break off established routes with the absolute certainty that his quarterback will find him.
“I will turn my head around or maybe even run a completely different route than what was called, and Pat is right on cue. Right on the money. Every single time, he knows,” Kelce told guest Randy Moss.
“That’s what happens when you golf together and play drinking games together. You have beer with a guy, you start to get in his head.”
A nine-year legacy defined by improvisation and record-setting stats
The numbers back up the chemistry. Since Mahomes became the starter in 2017, Kelce has been his most consistent target, hauling in 50 of his 82 career touchdowns from the two-time MVP. Their highlight reel is a testament to the “just get open” philosophy Mahomes once relayed to him.
From the game-winning overtime touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in the 2021 divisional round to the improvised 2020 playoff score against Houston, the duo has specialized in turning broken plays into game-changing moments. Even a “wrong” route during the 2024 preseason against Detroit resulted in a viral behind-the-back pass that Mahomes jokingly dubbed a “spite pass.”
Yet, the future of this partnership remains a focal point of league-wide discussion. The Chiefs are currently navigating a tumultuous offseason following a 6-11 campaign that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
The season ended in tragedy when Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025. While Mahomes is reportedly “crushing” his rehab in Kansas City and targeting a Week 1 return for the 2026 season, the injury has cast a shadow over whether Kelce will return for a 13th season.
For Kelce, the decision goes beyond the physical toll. He recently admitted on his podcast that the 70,000 fans at Arrowhead Stadium and the “grit and hard work” of making a playoff run are the elements he would miss most.
Whether the duo’s final connection has already happened or if there is one more chapter left in the Mahomes-Kelce playbook is the question currently gripping the Chiefs Kingdom.
