Travis Kelce received death threat from NFL player that left him paralyzed

Even the NFL’s biggest personalities have moments that humble them, and Travis Kelce is no exception.

While the Kansas City Chiefs‘ tight end has become a household name for his dominant play and larger-than-life charisma, his early NFL days were a far cry from the stardom he enjoys now.

Appearing on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, Kelce opened up about one such moment that left him speechless. The story involves former Green Bay Packers linebacker and fan favorite Clay Matthews, and a brief encounter at Lambeau Field that left Kelce rattled.

“It was 2014 – one of my first games – and I had maybe 10 catches total in my career up to that point,” Kelce recalled. “I’m thinking, ‘This is Lambeau. This is my moment. People are gonna know me after this.’ I see Clay Matthews and I’m like, ‘Oh [expletive], that’s Clay Matthews.'”

One block, one stare-down, and one unforgettable warning

Kelce described how he made a block on Matthews during the backside of an outside zone run. Riding high off the hit, the young tight end decided to fire off some trash talk.

“He stops, squares up to me, and says, ‘Don’t [expletive] ever [expletive] talk to me. I’ll [expletive] kill you,’ or something along the lines… I just stood there – couldn’t even say anything after that,” Kelce said.

Though Kelce didn’t specify the exact words used, the message was clear: Matthews wasn’t in the mood for rookie chatter. The moment served as a harsh lesson in NFL hierarchy and a reminder that legends like Matthews didn’t take kindly to being challenged, especially by unproven players.

The story, equal parts hilarious and intimidating, quickly made the rounds on social media. On Wednesday, Matthews himself chimed in on X with a cheeky response to the resurfaced clip.

“Allegedly @tkelce,” he wrote. “We were BFFs by the end of the game.”

Now a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game, Kelce can afford to look back at such moments with humor.

Still, the 2024 season was not his finest. Kelce posted 823 receiving yards, the lowest full-season total of his career, and the Chiefs fell just short of a historic Super Bowl three-peat, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

Rumors of retirement circulated in the offseason, but Kelce ultimately chose to return for another year. The 35-year-old remains a critical piece of Kansas City’s offense, and with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, another deep playoff run is always within reach.
