The Kansas City Chiefs‘ 40-22 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles cast doubt on the future of their tight end, Travis Kelce.
After reflecting on his future, the Chiefs star decided to wear the team’s colors for at least one more season. This year could be Kelce’s last in the NFL, meaning he could have only 17 games left to play, and he could reach a major milestone.
Standing out as one of the best TEs in his 175 games over a 12-year career, Travis has been nominated ten times for the Pro Bowl, has four All-Pro selections, and has won three Super Bowls (LIV, LVII, and LVIII).
Now, he is one step away from setting a new and important record in the history of his position. Or rather, 896 yards to be exact.
Another achievement for Kelce
The 35-year-old veteran will not only take the field to return to the Super Bowl for the fourth consecutive time and change the ending of this year’s story with Kansas City, but he could also reach Jason Witten’s 13,046 receiving yards.
The former Dallas Cowboys star ranks second among TEs with the most receiving yards, far behind Tony Gonzalez with a total of 15,127, who is the absolute and all-time leader.
Meanwhile, Travis has a total of 12,151 receiving yards, the third-highest total of any tight end in NFL history. He is very close to catching up with and surpassing Witten, as he officially has 896 yards left to go, which he could achieve this coming season. He could even surpass this mark by a wide margin if we consider that, despite last year not being the best for the Chiefs’ No. 87, he finished with 97 receptions for 823 yards and only three touchdowns.
And if he doesn’t reach 896 receiving yards, only 850 will be enough to position him as one of only three TEs to surpass 13,000 receiving yards.
However, what is most astonishing is that his two rivals have achieved these figures in almost 100 more games than Kelce. Gonzalez played 270 and Witten 271. Meanwhile, the Chiefs TE achieved this total in 175 games. This only goes to show that Travis is a player who has reached a high level and is now fundamental to the team. Will he reach this number and take Witten’s place?
