For a player that many consider to be a generational talent, you would think that Travis Hunter should be a lock to be the first player picked in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. That doesn’t seem to be the case, though. Odds have Cam Ward as the favorite to be the first player taken, while even Abdul Carter has gone ahead of Hunter in most mock drafts.
While mocks aren’t fully indicative of how NFL front offices truly feel, sometimes there’s fire where there’s smoke. It’s possible that teams still aren’t fully sure what Hunter’s main position should be, and whether they can maximize his two-way value at the next level. Still, most mocks have him going within the Top 5, except for one that dropped on Thursday.
Could Travis Hunter drop all the way to 7th overall in 2025 NFL Draft?
NFL.com’s Maurice Jones-Drew has Hunter going No. 7 overall to the New York Jets in his latest mock, which is about as low as we’ve seen during this draft process. The former Jacksonville Jaguars running back had this to say about the selection.
I’m guessing the Jets would be thrilled — and very surprised — to see the Heisman Trophy winner available here. Hunter is a generational talent with the ability to play on both sides of the ball for a team that has plenty of room for improvement at both cornerback and receiver.
MJD had the following players going ahead of Hunter: Ward, Carter, Shedeur Sanders, Will Campbell, Tetairoa McMillan, and Ashton Jeanty.
Like Jones-Drew says, the Jets would truly be ecstatic to see Hunter available to them at No. 7, especially since they wouldn’t have to give up any draft capital to get an elite prospect.
