Travis Hunter’s challenge to prove to Jaguars that he can both attack and defend starts now

The Jacksonville Jaguars are undergoing a process of restructure where they are embracing an unconventional approach this preseason. They say that their new star Travis Hunter will play on both offense and defense during training camp.

Yahoo Sports’s report states that the team has a plan to help Hunter work as both a wide receiver and a cornerback, something of rare sight in today’s NFL.

Hunter is no stranger to double roles

Hunter, picked second in the 2025 NFL Draft and a past Heisman Trophy winner, started camp working on wide receiver moves with coach Edgar Bennett. However, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said they intend to move Hunter between both roles often, even within the same practice session.

“You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense, and then give him an opportunity to go flip-flop within the same practice,” Coen told Yahoo Sports.

This double role is not a new deal for Hunter. When he was at Colorado, under coach Deion Sanders, Hunter got known for being great on both sides of the field. Now, the Jaguars think he can do well at the pro level too.

His discipline, a key factor in the plan

The coaches know it is a tough job to practise that way, for him and for the them. Coen talked about how they plan to make the most of Hunter’s time without making it too hard for him. “Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, it is accounted for,” he said, pointing out the team’s careful planning.

Hunter’s strong skills and smart play are why the Jaguars are willing to make him work so hard. Early talks from training camp show that Hunter still has a lot to learn at the NFL level, but his will to win and quick learning are clear.

However, some experts doubt if Hunter can do well in both spots against pro players. Others think the Jaguars might do well to focus on one position to help him grow in the long run.

But for now, the team is fully behind their double-role try. And with all eyes on him, Hunter seems set to take on the challenge.

Only the future can tell…

As the Jaguars’ training camp goes on, everyone will be watching No. 12, not just to see how good he does, but to find out if the NFL’s next big two-way star is really coming up in Jacksonville.

It could be a risky move, but it can turn out to be a life saver too. Having a player like Travis to perform correctly at two different positions will be crucial for the team’s season hopes. The best part of it, is that if he does not perform well at both, he will do it at one, so there is no many rooms for mistakes.

If Hunter reaches the expected level is a yet to see, but he has proven that he has the quality to play like angels at any levels. We can assume that his talent will be needed, but… the most?
