Travis Hunter is thriving in his first training camp as he gets to learn the playbook for both sides of the ball with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The sensational rookie has put in the work mostly as a wide receiver, but started to get some reps as a cornerback in the last few days.
The Jags will play Hunter on the offensive and defensive units, hoping that the former Heisman Trophy winner can provide a much needed spark for the Florida team after a terrible season that ended with a 4-13 record, good enough for a second to last place in the AFC South.
Travis Hunter gets humbled by Jaguars teammates
Travis Hunter, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft – superstar quarterback Cam Ward from the Miami Hurricanes was the first selection for the Tennessee Titans – is already turning heads at training camp. But despite his $46 million deal, he’s not exempt from rookie duties.
Cameras caught Hunter hauling the veterans’ pads off the field, part of the many duties that rookies have as newcomers in the league’s locker room. A reminder that in the NFL, even elite talent starts from the bottom, earning respect the old-school way.
Coaches and teammates admire Hunter‘s work ethic. They see him as a future star on both sides of the ball. But for now, he’s just a rookie, carrying pads and building trust, one rep at a time. Understanding the process and being humble about it will take Travis far.
Jaguars coach is excited about the future
Monday was the first Jacksonville Jaguars trainin camp practice with pads, which is something players and coaches were waiting since the draft. The team worked for about an hour, 15 minutes in near 90-degree temperatures Monday at the Miller Electric Center.
They held individual drills, with a period of one-on-one pass rush and also moved quickly into full-team contact work in the day’s fifth period. “I was pleased,” head coach Liam Coen said. The early team period and a later team period featured heavy hitting, with coaches emphasizing players not tackling or hitting all the way to the ground for safety reasons.
Travis Hunter practiced on offense after working the previous two practices on defense and camp’s first two practices on offense. He participated in 12 plays – all in 11-on-11 work and caught one pass. Running backs Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne Jr. had strong runs in team periods, and rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. continued to have a strong camp with multiple strong runs in team periods.
