Travis Hunter divides NFL franchises: One head coach shoots down two-way potential, GM disagrees

The smoke is starting to clear with the 2025 NFL Draft a week away. Cam Ward is now the heavy favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Tennessee Titans. After differing streams of speculation, it sounds like Travis Hunter will go No. 2 to the Cleveland Browns. Then come the New York Giants, who seem to be eyeing Abdul Carter more than anyone else. Anything can happen after that, but that’s what the start of the draft is looking like.

The Browns and Giants are intriguing case studies. If Ward were available, both teams would likely take him. But with Shedeur Sanders having one too many question marks, both teams look likely to pass on quarterback for a freaky athlete. Hunter is considered a generational talent by many, although his two-way potential at the next level has been questioned. It’s not just analysts wondering if he can really pull it off.

John Harbaugh doesn’t think Travis Hunter can play both WR and CB in NFL full-time

Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta and head coach John Harbaugh both expressed doubts recently about Hunter’s ability to play both wide receiver and cornerback in the NFL.

  • DeCosta: “If we’re talking about a guy like Travis Hunter, we would probably want to put him at one position.”
  • Harbaugh: “But to say that you’re going to be completely immersed in everything that there is to know on offense and everything there is to defense, I don’t know if there’s enough hours in the day for a player to be able to do that and to have every detail locked down.”

The Ravens won’t be getting Hunter anyway, so it’s a moot point. But they likely aren’t the only GM-HC pairing that feel that way about Hunter.

On the other end of the spectrum is Giants general manager Joe Schoen, who would be completely for Hunter playing both positions for his team.

That’s notable because the Giants are picking right after the Browns. If Cleveland surprises everyone and passes on Hunter, the Giants would likely scoop him up and throw him to the wolves on both sides of the ball.
