Travelers Championship drama: Injuries pile up ahead of the anticipated final PGA signature event

The Travelers Championship is set to tee off this Thursday, closing out the PGA Tour’ssignature events for the season. Scottie Scheffler will be back to defend his 2024 title, while Rory McIlroy returns to the field after skipping last year’s tournament. With a $20 million purse and plenty of FedEx Cup points at stake, excitement is building-but so is concern.

In the days leading up to the event, multiple golfers have popped up on the radar for less-than-ideal reasons: injuries. And while some are still listed in the field, their actual participation remains up in the air.

Hideki Matsuyama is reportedly still battling back issues that have been bothering him for months. Jason Day, who’s earned more than $64 million over his career, is dealing with persistent neck pain. Alex Noren is facing a leg injury, and Brian Campbell hasn’t fully recovered from shoulder discomfort.

Corey Conners Officially Out – and It Might Not Be the Last Name Removed

While the others are still in the field as of Wednesday, Canadian Corey Conners has officially withdrawn. His right wrist, which took a hit during the U.S. Open, hasn’t improved enough for him to compete. Conners’ exit on June 17 opens a slot for Jhonattan Vegas, who will step in as a late addition.

The lineup, at least on paper, still includes all the injured players. Campbell is paired with Bud Cauley, Day with Max Homa, Noren with Cam Davis, and Matsuyama with Justin Thomas. But whether all of them will actually play-or finish the tournament-is an open question.

Despite the uncertainty, McIlroy shared optimism in his pre-tournament comments: “After a week like I had at Oakmont, where you’re not quite in the mix but you feel like you’ve found something in your game, you’re excited to come back and play again.”

Fans and bettors alike will be watching closely to see if any of these last-minute health issues lead to more withdrawals. Either way, the drama at TPC River Highlands is already well underway-even before the first swing.
