The league shows no hesitation when it comes to disciplining players or any other member of its ecosystem who commits a preventable mistake. This time, it was the turn of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice, who received word that he will be suspended for six games.
The punishment comes after it was revealed that Rice was involved in a car accident in March 2024, caused by excessive speeding. The NFL and the NFL Players Association worked closely to finalize the penalty for the member of last season’s runners-up.
According to several reports, Rice did not appeal the league’s decision. It is a significant setback for the Chiefs, who will have to deal with a considerable absence as they open their 2025 campaign.
Rashee Rice’s culpability
On July 17, the receiver pleaded guilty to three charges, including:
- Collision involving serious bodily injury, and
- Racing on a highway causes bodily injury.
A Dallas district court judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail and five years of probation.
The district attorney’s office said the player had also agreed to pay more than $115,000 in “restitution to all the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses.” That agreement was presented before his guilty plea.
Rice’s 2024 season
The Chiefs had been hoping that 2025 would bring redemption for their receiver after a lost 2024 season. He managed to appear in only four games, missing the remainder due to a knee injury sustained following a collision with his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
It was a painful year for Rice. He finished with just 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns, a disappointing output for a player once projected as a rising star in the offense.
Now, with the suspension in place, he will not be able to participate in the team’s first six games of the 2025 season, further delaying his opportunity to bounce back.
International game for the Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs will open their 2025 season against the Los Angeles Chargers in the league’s first international game of the year, set to be played in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, September 5.
The matchup carries extra weight for the Chiefs, who are still stung by the lopsided defeat they suffered at the hands of the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. More than the score itself, it was the poor performance on both sides of the ball that left deep frustration.
The season opener will pit them against a divisional rival that has been rapidly transforming. Since the arrival of Jim Harbaugh last year, the Chargers have extracted the best out of quarterback Justin Herbert, while the defense has begun producing stronger results. With that combination, their rivals would be wise not to underestimate them.
It will be a tough way for the Chiefs to begin their season-on foreign soil and without one of their most important offensive weapons.
