Top NFL free agents still available before 2026 draft headlined by wide receivers

With less than two weeks to go before the opening round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the speculation around the top of the board is finally cooling off. It is essentially a foregone conclusion that National Champion Fernando Mendoza will be the first overall pick, making him the 41st quarterback taken at the top spot and the eighth in just the last ten years. But while the #1 pick is locked, the rest of the draft is a powder keg.

We expect aggressive NFL trades, either for teams desperate to move up for a franchise tackle or for organizations willing to ship their picks for proven veteran talent.

Speaking of proven talent, the initial wave of NFL free agency may be over, but several “impact” players remain on the board. For teams that don’t find what they need in the draft, these veterans represent a crucial “Plan B” to solidify a roster before training camp.

Strategic Stays: Why These Veteran Free Agents Are the Ultimate Draft Day Insurance

The current crop of available players isn’t just a list of “leftovers”; it’s a group of established stars who can change the geometry of an offense or defense immediately. From a 4x MVP looking for a reunion to elite wide receivers with Super Bowl pedigree, the value remaining on the market is significant. Here are the top names still looking for a home before the draft clock starts:

  • Aaron Rodgers, QB (42): The rumors are deafening, Rodgers looks destined for the Pittsburgh Steelers. A move to the Steel City would reunite him with Mike McCarthy, the man he spent 13 seasons with in Green Bay. With Mason Rudolph and Will Howard currently on the depth chart, Rodgers provides the elite ceiling Pittsburgh needs to capitalize on their recent offensive upgrades.
  • Jauan Jennings, WR (29): At 6-foot-3, Jennings is the ultimate “safety blanket” receiver. He hauled in 55 passes and nine touchdowns for a battered 49ers squad last year. For a team like the Las Vegas Raiders, Jennings would be the perfect veteran target to help transition Fernando Mendoza into the pro game, especially with Brock Bowers currently being the only other high-level threat.
  • Stefon Diggs, WR (32): Diggs is coming off a 1,000-yard season with the New England Patriots, but the “baggage” label is following him. Entering his age-33 season and potentially looking at his fourth team in four years, his legal and off-field hurdles are real concerns. However, from a pure talent perspective, Diggs remains a top-tier route runner who instantly upgrades any WR room.

  • Joel Bitonio, OL (34): If you need a technician, Bitonio is the answer. He posted a 96.4% pass block win rate in 2025-the third-best among all qualifying guards. For a contender needing an anchor and a veteran voice in the locker room, Bitonio is a plug-and-play starter for a 13th season.
  • Deebo Samuel, WR (30): After a frustrating year with the Washington Commanders plagued by QB injuries, Deebo remains the king of YAC (Yard After Catch). With 63.7% of his yards coming after the catch last year, he’s a weapon that needs a creative play-caller. The Indianapolis Colts, who currently lack a first-round pick after letting Michael Pittman Jr. walk, should be all over this.

Building the Final Roster: Edge Rushers and Offensive Tackles Still in Play

While the receivers are grabbing the headlines, the “big men” on the market will likely be the first to sign once the draft concludes and teams realize they missed out on their rookie targets. Players like Taylor Decker and Cam Robinson offer immediate stability at offensive tackle, a position where there is never enough depth in today’s NFL.

On the defensive side, Joey Bosa remains the most intriguing Edge rusher available. When healthy, he is a game-wrecker, and teams like the Falcons or Lions could see him as the missing piece for a deep playoff run.

Additionally, seeing veterans like Bobby Wagner, Calais Campbell, and tight end David Njoku still available is a testament to how much talent is sitting on the sidelines. For the savvy GM, the real work doesn’t end when the draft finishes-it begins when these veterans start picking up their phones.
