Top 3 potential replacements for Luka Doncic in the 2026 NBA All-Star game

The 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend is shaping up to be another marquee showcase for the league’s elite talent. With a star-studded pool of candidates and renewed global interest in the midseason spectacle, anticipation continues to build.

However, uncertainty surrounds the availability of Los Angeles Lakers cornerstone Luka Doncic, whose recent hamstring injury has cast doubt over his participation.

After being acquired by the Lakers in a blockbuster move that reshaped the Western Conference hierarchy, Doncic has delivered an exceptional campaign.

His offensive orchestration, shot creation, and rebounding presence have elevated the franchise’s ceiling.

Yet the hamstring setback created a significant void within the Lakers rotation, limiting his statistical production and raising legitimate questions about his All-Star readiness.

With several prominent players already ruled out due to injury, league officials may soon need to identify a replacement should Doncic be unable to suit up. Three compelling candidates have emerged as logical options.

James Harden, Cleveland Cavaliers

Recently traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, James Harden has quickly demonstrated why he remains one of the most dynamic offensive guards in professional basketball.

Through 47 games this season, he is averaging 25 points and 8.2 assists while shooting 42 percent from the field and 35 percent from three-point range. His 90.2 percent free-throw conversion underscores his continued efficiency in high-leverage moments.

In addition, Harden contributes 4.9 rebounds per game and has compiled 16 double-doubles and two triple-doubles. His playmaking acumen and ability to control tempo would seamlessly translate to the All-Star stage.

A nod would also mark a strong early statement in his tenure with the Cavaliers, reinforcing his relevance among the league’s premier guards.

Lauri Markkanen, Utah Jazz

If positional balance and scoring output are prioritized, Lauri Markkanen presents a compelling case.

The Finnish forward ranks 11th overall in total points this season, averaging 26.7 per contest for the Utah Jazz. Despite the Utah Jazz experiencing inconsistency in the standings, Markkanen has maintained elite-level production.

At 28 years old, Markkanen is firmly in his prime and previously appeared during the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend.

His versatility, perimeter shooting, and size profile would also align well with the increasingly international complexion of the event. Should Doncic withdraw, Lauri Markkanen could be a fitting addition to the inaugural NBA All-Star Team World.

Austin Reaves, Los Angeles Lakers

An internal replacement from the Lakers roster could generate additional intrigue. Austin Reaves has filled in several times for Doncic and has elevated his performance this season.

In 27 games, Reaves is averaging 25.7 points and six assists while converting 87.1 percent of his free throws.

Following a lengthy injury absence, Reaves returned with efficiency, recording six double-doubles and providing two-way stability.

His chemistry with Doncic has been central to the Lakers offensive identity, and rewarding his breakout year with an All-Star selection would reflect both production and team impact.

As the 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend approaches, the status of Doncic remains pivotal.

The league has several options to choose from, but picking a former MVP in Harden, a high-volume scorer in Markkanen, or an ascending backcourt partner in Reaves shows that even a few star names will miss out on the cherished game.
