Tony Romo and the right: Former QB’s conservative connections resurface

As the 2025 NFL season draws closer, CBS analyst Tony Romo is grabbing the spotlight not only for his football insights, but also for a political past that continues to stir conversation.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, once hailed for his quick rise as a broadcaster, remains CBS’ lead NFL analyst despite mounting speculation about his long-term future in the booth.

Looking back at Tony Romo’s political leanings

Romo, who reportedly earns close to $20 million annually, is expected to call many of the league’s top matchups this season, particularly games featuring the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens.

But his off-the-field connections, including his rapport with prominent Republican figures, have occasionally put him at odds with some fans.

Romo’s political affiliations became more apparent during the 2024 election.

In May, he was seen golfing with former President Donald Trump during the latter’s visit to Dallas for an NRA convention.

Video from the outing quickly circulated online, drawing a mix of admiration and criticism.

“I played golf today with a really good golfer: Tony Romo. Do you know Tony Romo?”Trump remarked during a speech.

“He may be a better golfer than a football player. I don’t know.”

Their relationship isn’t new.

Trump praised Romo back in 2015 following a season-ending injury, calling him “a great guy” and “a great football player,” and noting his absence would “certainly hurt Dallas.”

Romo then attended the President’s inauguration in 2017.

Beyond Trump, Romo has also drawn scrutiny for comments about former President George W. Bush during an NFL broadcast last season.

“He’s very impressive. He loves sports, he loves America. One of the greatest human beings you’ll ever meet,”Romo said, prompting a backlash from some viewers on social media.

While Romo generally keeps politics out of his commentary, these moments have opened the door to criticism, especially given the divisive nature of modern political discourse.

His admiration for Bush, whose presidency remains controversial due to decisions like the Iraq War and the response to Hurricane Katrina, struck a nerve with some fans expecting apolitical coverage during games.

Still, Romo appears unfazed.

Known for his lighthearted, personable style, the former quarterback continues to blend analysis with enthusiasm, even as his words off the field occasionally echo louder than the ones he shares on game day.
