Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS analyst Tony Romo made it clear that the Kansas City Chiefs still have plenty of room to grow as a dynasty within the NFL. Speaking at the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, Romo-once the leader of Dallas’s offense and, in recent years, one of the most insightful voices in football commentary-had this to say about the Chiefs:
They’ve been saying that for years,”…”They said that about Brady and the Patriots and Belichick. It’s the same thing. You got Andy Reid, you got Mahomes, you got Kelce. You guys are going to be fine
Talk of the end of the Chiefs era
This narrative has gained traction in 2025, largely due to the expectation that star tight end Travis Kelce, who turns 36 this season, will retire at the end of the year. But for analysts like Romo, that scenario seems to be of little concern-or at least not alarming enough to signal the downfall of the franchise
To break things down more clearly: the Chiefs still have one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Patrick Mahomes. He’s already won three Vince Lombardi trophies, has been named Super Bowl MVP three times, and has two league MVP awards.
They’ve dominated the AFC, reaching seven straight conference championship games. Mahomes is also signed to a long-term contract, which gives Kansas City the flexibility to rebuild continuously around him-a major strategic advantage.
Then there’s the mastermind on the sidelines: Andy Reid. He remains one of the most effective and innovative head coaches in the NFL. His ability to adapt to new pieces and overcome the departures of key players, like Tyreek Hill, while maintaining a strong relationship with Mahomes, keeps the team at the top of both their division and conference.
Even though this might be Travis Kelce’s final season in the NFL, and even though his numbers have declined slightly over the past two years, he remains a dominant offensive weapon. His competitiveness, ability to gain key yardage, and knack for scoring touchdowns continue to set him apart.
Where Kansas City may need the most reinforcement is on the defensive side of the ball. By the end of last season, their defense showed signs of fatigue and lacked the dominance they had in previous years. That may have contributed to their heavy defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
Faced with this, Andy Reid and his coaching staff are likely already hard at work identifying and addressing the issues that held them back last season-preparing the team to once again contend for the title.
And as Tony Romo said, the dynasty the Chiefs have built over the past few years still appears far from over. While other teams may rotate through the Super Bowl spotlight, it’s safe to say Kansas City will continue to be in the mix.
