Tommy Fleetwood opens up about his stepson’s recovery after emotional tour championship win

Tommy Fleetwood‘s breakthrough PGA Tour triumph last month came with a mix of elation and personal reflection.

While the English golfer made history by securing his first Tour Championship win and the $10 million FedEx Cup, not all members of his family could be there to witness the moment in person.

Ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, Fleetwood offered insight on Wednesday into the circumstances keeping part of his family away from the East Lake Golf Club celebrations.

His stepson, Mo Murray, was recovering from a major spinal surgery, and his wife, Clare, was dedicated to supporting the recovery process.

“Our middle boy, Mo [Murray], had a spinal operation just over a month ago now. So they were unable to travel,” Fleetwood explained.

“Actually, the week of Memphis, they were in the hospital and he was recovering, and then eventually got home just before we got home. He had three and a half weeks in the hospital, so that’s why they weren’t there, but Oscar came out to be with me.”

The PGA Tour victory in late August marked a career milestone for Fleetwood, 34, who overcame fierce competition from Americans Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley, winning by three strokes.

The triumph was Fleetwood’s first since joining the PGA Tour in 2018 and cemented his position among the sport’s elite, ranking him world No. 6.

Fleetwood’s emotional moment at East Lake was made even more meaningful by the presence of his stepson Oscar, who joined him on the course as he proudly hoisted the FedEx Cup trophy.

Family at the forefront

Fleetwood‘s family life has long been a central part of his narrative, with Clare, his wife, balancing life as a mother to three sons.

Oscar and Murray are her sons from a previous marriage, while Franklin is the couple’s shared child.

The absence of Murray during Fleetwood’s historic win underscored the personal challenges athletes often navigate alongside their professional careers.

Fleetwood reflected on the balance required between his sport and his family commitments, emphasizing the importance of being present for his loved ones.

“Oscar came out to be with me,” he said, highlighting the stepson’s role in sharing the victory despite Murray’s hospitalization.

The moment revealed not only Fleetwood’s dedication to golf but also the strong family bonds that support him behind the scenes.

With Murray now recovered, Fleetwood confirmed that his stepson will be able to attend the BMW PGA Championship this week.

It promises to be a special reunion as the English golfer continues his rise on the international stage, blending professional success with family milestones.

As he looks ahead to upcoming tournaments, Fleetwood’s focus remains not only on performance but on cherishing the support network that has helped him reach the top of the sport.
