Tom Rafferty, a cornerstone of the Dallas Cowboys‘ offensive line during a transformative era for the franchise, died Thursday in Windsor, Colorado, at the age of 70.

His daughter, Rachel Powers, confirmed that he had been hospitalized since early May due to complications from a stroke.

Born on August 2, 1954, in Syracuse, New York, Rafferty’s football journey began at Penn State University, where he transitioned from defensive to offensive line under coach Joe Paterno.

His collegiate success led to his selection by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 1976 NFL Draft. Rafferty spent his entire 14-year NFL career with Dallas, showcasing remarkable versatility and resilience.

A Legacy of Durability and Leadership

Rafferty quickly established himself as a reliable presence on the Cowboys’ offensive front. After stepping in for Blaine Nye at right guard in his second season, he held the position for four years before transitioning to center in 1981.

His adaptability was crucial during a period when the team featured quarterbacks like Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

One of Rafferty‘s most notable achievements was his streak of 167 consecutive starts, a franchise record at the time. He played in 203 games, starting 182, and participated in two Super Bowls. His consistent performance and leadership were instrumental in the Cowboys‘ success during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Rafferty was known for his intelligence and work ethic. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 256 pounds, he may have been considered undersized by today’s standards, but his quickness and technique made him a formidable opponent.

He was part of the line that enabled Tony Dorsett‘s record-setting 99-yard touchdown run in 1983.

After retiring in 1989, Rafferty transitioned into a career in sports equipment sales. He also faced personal health challenges, including a battle with transverse myelitis in 2008, which required him to relearn how to walk. Despite these obstacles, he remained a respected figure in the Cowboys community.

Rafferty‘s passing marks the loss of a player whose dedication and perseverance left a lasting impact on the Dallas Cowboys and their fans.
