Tom Brady’s mentorship and Pete Carroll’s trade open door for Shedeur Sanders in Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Raiders may have secured a veteran quarterback in Geno Smith this offseason, but that hasn’t stopped the buzz surrounding their potential draft-day move for Shedeur Sanders. One major reason? Tom Brady. The former Patriots legend and current Raiders part-owner has reportedly taken an active role in Sanders‘ development, serving as a mentor to the Colorado standout. That relationship could prove decisive as the team weighs its options with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Sanders, once projected as a top-three pick, has seen his stock fluctuate in recent weeks. He’s been visiting several teams, including the New York Giants, and could realistically land anywhere from the top five to the late first round. But among all the potential suitors, the Raiders continue to stand out, not just for their long-standing need at quarterback, but for the connections already in place.

Carroll’s exit and Smith’s arrival complicate the picture

When Pete Carroll stepped down from the Seattle Seahawks, the move paved the way for Geno Smith’s trade to Las Vegas. At first glance, this seemed to solidify the Raiders‘ short-term plans at quarterback. Smith, a seasoned presence, brings leadership and stability. But sources around the league suggest that his arrival won’t necessarily prevent the Raiders from drafting a QB especially one with Sanders‘ poise and precision.

In a recent mock draft by Athlon Sports, NFL analyst Moe Moton projected Sanders going to the Raiders despite Smith’s presence. Moton argues that while Smith can hold down the starting role in the short term, Sanders offers a compelling long-term vision. His 71.8% completion rate, pocket awareness, and accurate short-range throws have impressed scouts, even if he lacks elite scrambling ability.

Raiders may play the long game

With Brady influencing decisions behind the scenes and a quarterback-friendly staff in place, the Raiders might be positioning themselves for the future. Drafting Sanders wouldn’t mean abandoning Smith it would mean preparing for a seamless transition, something the franchise has struggled to achieve for years.

The real draft drama unfolds on April 24 in Green Bay, but the signs in Las Vegas suggest that Shedeur Sanders may already have one foot inside Allegiant Stadium. And with Tom Brady whispering in his ear, the future might arrive sooner than expected.
