Tom Brady’s cloned dog resurfaces as NFL legend reignites debate with quiet Miami outing

Most retired athletes see a post-gym walk with their dog as nothing unique, but for Tom Brady, it has once again sparked a wider conversation, not about football, but about one of the most unusual personal decisions of his life.

The former quarterback was seen leaving a workout in Surfside, Florida this week, accompanied by his dog Junie. On the surface, it was a routine moment. But Junie is no ordinary pet. She is a clone of Brady’s late dog Lua, a revelation that continues to divide opinion months after it first became public.

The sighting brought renewed attention to a story that sits at the intersection of sport, science and personal loss, and one that Brady has never shied away from explaining.

Brady first disclosed the truth about Junie in late 2025, confirming that the dog had been created using DNA from Lua, a pit bull mix that had been part of his family for nearly a decade. Lua passed away in 2023, shortly after Brady‘s separation from Gisele Bündchen.

Speaking at the time through Colossal Biosciences, Brady framed the decision in deeply personal terms.

“They mean the world to me and my family,” he said. “A few years ago, I worked with Colossal Biosciences and leveraged their non-invasive cloning technology… They gave my family a second chance with a clone of our beloved dog.”

For Brady, the process was not about novelty or experimentation. It was about preserving a bond that had become part of his family’s daily life. Junie, he has said, is treated no differently than any other pet.

A decision that sparked strong reactions

Not everyone saw it the same way. The announcement quickly drew mixed reactions, with some fans expressing understanding and others questioning the ethics and optics of cloning animals.

Public figures such as Dave Portnoy openly criticized the move, calling it “weird,” while others pointed to the high cost of cloning, often between $50,000 and $85,000, as a point of contention.

The debate has also touched on broader issues within animal welfare, with critics highlighting the number of shelter animals in need of homes. Brady has largely stayed away from engaging in that debate publicly, instead focusing on what the decision means to him and his children.

Brady‘s choice is part of a wider, if still niche, trend among high-profile figures. Celebrities including Paris Hilton and Barbra Streisand have also turned to cloning services in recent years, bringing the practice into mainstream conversation.

The technology itself has evolved rapidly, with companies like Colossal Biosciences pushing forward not only pet cloning but also ambitious projects linked to conservation and species revival. While the science continues to advance, public opinion remains divided, with emotional motivations often clashing with ethical concerns.

Brady’s evolving life beyond football

Since stepping away from the game, Brady has embraced a different pace of life, balancing business ventures, media commitments and family responsibilities. His Miami outing, though simple, offered a glimpse into that transition.

He has also shown a willingness to adapt in other areas, recently addressing criticism over partnerships with brands that contrast with his famously strict lifestyle.

“It’s moderation in all things,” Brady said in a recent interview, acknowledging that his perspective has shifted over time.

Yet moments like this highlight something consistent about Tom Brady. Whether redefining longevity in the NFL or navigating life after retirement, he continues to make decisions on his own terms, even when they invite scrutiny.
