Birmingham City is set to take center stage this summer with the launch of its much-anticipated Amazon Prime documentary, Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues, which premieres on August 1.

At the heart of the five-part series is NFL icon Tom Brady, who surprised many when he became a minority owner of the club in 2023 following Knighthead Capital Management’s takeover.

The trailer, recently dropped across Birmingham’s social media platforms, leans heavily into Brady’s unexpected involvement in English football. It opens with reactions from bewildered fans asking, “Tom Brady, who’s he?” and joking, “What he knows about football you could put on a postage stamp.”

But Brady makes his intentions clear: “We’re trying to make Birmingham City a world-class team.”

The series promises a comprehensive look at one of the most eventful periods in the club’s history, documenting the relegation from the Championship, a chaotic managerial carousel, and the record-breaking League One title-winning campaign under Chris Davies.

Fans can expect inside footage of high-stakes matches, tense dressing-room moments, and the emotional rollercoaster that defined the Blues’ dramatic turnaround.

A cultural revival on and off the pitch

Executive produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight-a lifelong Birmingham supporter-the documentary aims to be more than just a sports series. Directors Gotham Chopra and Claudia Corbisiero delve deep into the soul of the club and the city, exploring Birmingham’s working-class roots, its resilient supporter base, and a community long starved of footballing glory.

It also captures the club’s ambitious long-term vision, including plans to leave their spiritual home at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for a new 62,000-seater stadium in Bordesley Green. This move is set to anchor a larger “Sports Quarter” development, recently boosted by government funding for a new tramline connecting the city center.

The series is already drawing comparisons to Welcome to Wrexham, but Brady doesn’t shy away from the rivalry. In one scene, he directly challenges Wrexham’s Hollywood owners with a cheeky, “Wrexham, we’re coming for your a**.”

Reactions from fans have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the authenticity and ambition behind the project.

With the Championship season kicking off against Ipswich just days after the series drops-and high-profile signings like Kyogo Furuhashi energizing fans-Built in Birmingham arrives at the perfect time. It’s not just a documentary; it’s a rallying cry for a sleeping giant ready to rise again.

From gridiron to St Andrew’s, Tom Brady’s journey with Birmingham City might just be the most unexpected comeback story in football.
