Tom Brady reflects on Patrick Mahomes’ potential to match his NFL greatness

In a recent conversation, Las Vegas Raiders‘ minority owner Tom Brady, often hailed as the greatest quarterback in NFL history, was asked whether Kansas City Chiefs‘ star QB Patrick Mahomes could mirror his storied career.

Brady‘s response was nothing short of glowing, highlighting both Mahomes‘ mindset and his broader organizational framework.

Brady, speaking alongside Kevin Hart at Fanatics Fest, emphasized Mahomes‘ “mentality” and “will to win”, stating:

“The great players that I’ve played with, Patrick has their mentality. He has the will to win. He’s got a desire every time he takes the field to be a great leader. I listen to what guys say after they win, I listen to what guys say after they lose. Everything he says is the right thing.”

He went on to praise the Chiefs‘ strong infrastructure:

“He’s got a great coach, great general manager, great ownership, and the parts around him.”

Mahomes‘ track record speaks volumes. By the age of 30, he had already secured three Super Bowl victories, and could soon become the first QB in NFL history to win three consecutive championships.

That upward trajectory is precisely why many believe he has what it takes to chase Brady’s GOAT status.

The rise of Mahomes in context

Since becoming Kansas City‘s full-time starter in 2018, Mahomes has cemented his position as a transcendent talent.

His unconventional plays and arm talent revolutionized the position, while his statistical dominance has only solidified his standing.

He’s one of just five QBs in league history to win three or more Super Bowls as a starter, and he’s led the Chiefs to seven straight AFC Championship games.

Moreover, his ascent has come in an era stacked with elite competitors. Kalif Stockton, note, isn’t the only one: AFC West – including Geno Smith and Bo Nix – now features a trio of proven starters, but Mahomes consistently rises above as the leader of the pack.

Brady pointed out that while he doesn’t directly compare himself to Mahomes, he recognizes key parallels in their approach: preparation, leadership, and internal drive.

His endorsement is powerful not only because of his accomplishments but also his role as a mentor-turned-owner. It gives weight to his belief that Mahomes has the mental and structural foundation to replicate, or even surpass, his career achievements.

In recent years, Brady himself transitioned from quarterback to broadcast analyst and NFL team owner. He joined Fox as a lead color commentator and became part-owner of the Raiders in 2024.

His dual role as a broadcaster and team executive has invited scrutiny, but it’s also given him a fresh vantage point from which to view the league’s rising stars, Mahomes chief among them.

Brady‘s praise of Mahomes is more than routine admiration, it’s a nod to the future of the quarterback position.
