Tom Brady puts his foot in his mouth with strange dog remark during NFL coverage

NFL legend Tom Brady is no stranger to controversy, but his latest remarks during a live television broadcast have left many fans stunned and outraged. While providing commentary during Fox’s coverage of the Chicago Bears vs. Dallas Cowboys game, Brady made a statement that immediately caught viewers off guard.

Responding to footage of wide receiver George Pickens throwing his helmet in frustration, Brady commented: “Those helmets can be… like a dog at home. Kick the dog, throw the helmet. Whatever it takes.”

The remark was intended to describe a moment of competitive anger, but many fans didn’t take it that way. Within minutes, social media erupted with confusion and backlash.

One viewer wrote, “Tom Brady just admitted to kicking his dog at home…” Another said, “Comparing a helmet toss to kicking your dog isn’t the color commentary we need.” Even sports commentator Skip Bayless weighed in, joking, “I hope Brady didn’t go home after bad losses and angrily throw the dog.”

Brady is known to be a dog lover, which added another layer of irony to the situation. He and his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen adopted a dog named Fluffy in 2016.

The couple previously owned a dog named Lua, who passed away in 2023. Brady shared an emotional tribute at the time, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram: “We love you Lua… forever in our hearts,” alongside a photo of his children hugging the beloved pet.

Brady’s dual roles raise further concerns

Beyond his broadcasting duties, Brady has also taken on an executive role in the NFL as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. This unique dual role, as both a Fox Sports analyst and part-owner of an active team, has already stirred ethical debates, and this latest incident has only added fuel to the fire.

Former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce recently shared that Brady has provided the team with useful insight gleaned from his broadcasting access.

Speaking on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, Pierce said, “It’s not hard for him to watch a Friday practice or sit in a production meeting and come away with useful tidbits. You’d be naive to think he wouldn’t share that with the Raiders.”

Though Pierce admitted Brady was a valuable asset during his time in Vegas, he also acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation. “If I were a coach on the other side, I’d be tight-lipped. I’d be nervous,” he admitted.

While the NFL has outlined rules, dubbed informally as the “Brady Rules”, to limit his access to facilities other than the Raiders’, the controversy illustrates the unusual nature of his dual position.

Whether Brady’s “kick the dog” comment was just a clumsy metaphor or something more serious, one thing is clear: fans and critics alike are watching his every move, both on the field and behind the mic.
