Tom Brady needs something special from Maxx Crosby for Raiders to compete in 2025

For years, Maxx Crosby has been the cornerstone of the Las Vegas Raiders’ defense, bringing relentless energy and elite production. Since being drafted in 2019, Crosby played in every game for four consecutive seasons, solidifying himself as one of the NFL’s most durable and dominant defensive ends. However, last season, injuries forced him to miss the final five games-a rare setback in an otherwise stellar career. Now fully healed, the veteran pass rusher is ready to return to his disruptive form and anchor a Raiders defense in transition.

Crosby’s impact on the field is undeniable. With nearly 60 sacks and over 360 tackles under his belt, he has consistently been among the league’s top edge rushers. His ability to pressure quarterbacks and set the tone defensively has made him a fan favorite and a respected figure in the locker room. Yet, 2024 was a challenging year, as his production dipped significantly. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade dropped to 74.3, ranking him 25th among edge rushers-his lowest rating since 2020.

Despite the statistical decline, analysts believe Crosby is poised for a bounce-back season. PFF’s Zolton Buday pointed out that from 2021 to 2023, Crosby consistently ranked among the top four edge defenders, earning an overall grade above 90. His pass-rush win rate and pressure rate placed him in elite company alongside Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons. With a full offseason to recover and refine his game, Crosby is expected to return to form and reclaim his spot among the league’s best.

There is reason for hope

The Raiders enter 2025 with a revamped roster, especially on defense, where nearly half of last season’s starters departed in free agency. While Las Vegas faces uncertainties on that side of the ball, Crosby remains a constant presence and a leader amid the changes. His role as the defensive anchor is more vital than ever, as the team looks to reestablish its identity.

One factor that could significantly impact Crosby’s effectiveness is the Raiders’ improved offense. The additions of quarterback Geno Smith and running back Ashton Jeanty are expected to help Las Vegas sustain drives and control possession. Last season, the offense struggled to keep the ball, forcing Crosby and the defense into high-pressure situations. With more support from the offensive unit, Crosby will have better opportunities to make game-changing plays without being overextended.

At 28 years old, Crosby is still in his prime and has plenty left in the tank. As he prepares for the upcoming season, the expectation is that he will return to his dominant form and lead the Raiders’ defense with the same intensity that made him a star. With a healthier roster and a renewed focus, Crosby has the chance to make 2025 a redemption year-both for himself and the Raiders.
