Tom Brady has finally acknowledged the underlying tension that developed during the final years of his two-decade partnership with head coach Bill Belichick in New England.
In the latest edition of his personal newsletter, the seven-time Super Bowl champion pulled back the curtain on what was once one of the NFL’s most closely guarded dynamics.
Despite a historic run that included six Super Bowl titles in nine appearances together, Brady revealed that he and Belichick had gradually drifted apart-both professionally and philosophically-leading to his eventual departure from the Patriots in 2020.
“It was a creeping decision that lived passively in the back of mind for [two to three] years,” Brady wrote. “Until March of 2020 when a whirlwind of a few days made me realize that a decision was coming sooner rather than later.”
While Brady‘s exit may have seemed abrupt at the time, he made it clear the idea of leaving had been quietly growing.
He described a subtle but undeniable strain in the relationship, as both he and Belichick began moving in different directions-personally, professionally, and within a franchise evolving toward its next chapter.
“After 20 years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise,” he explained.
“It was the kind of tension that could only be resolved by some kind of split or one of us reassessing our priorities.”
A legendary partnership that needed space to heal
Brady‘s decision to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March 2020 marked the end of an era and the start of a new legacy.
He quickly proved he still had elite football left in him, leading Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl victory in his first season with the team-adding a seventh ring to his collection and doing it without Belichick by his side.
Meanwhile, the Patriots entered a transitional phase, with Belichick attempting to rebuild the roster and find Brady‘s successor.
While there was no public fallout between the two at the time, many within NFL circles speculated that the icy relationship had been quietly simmering for years.
