The aftermath of what happened at the NFL Draft a couple of weeks ago in Green Bay continues to make waves. All eyes were on what would happen with Shedeur Sanders, who, before the event, was projected to be selected in the first round or perhaps at the start of the second round-but everything fell apart.
Player after player was picked, quarterbacks came and went, and the name of the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback was never called. Finally, on Day 3 of the Draft, in the fifth round, the Cleveland Browns made a trade and used the 144th pick to select Shedeur Sanders. The Browns had already picked Dillon Gabriel, a quarterback from Oregon, in the third round.
Among all the NFL teams projected to take Shedeur Sanders during last season and earlier this year, the Las Vegas Raiders were undoubtedly top contenders. But after the hiring of Pete Carroll as the new Head Coach and the addition of Geno Smith as the new quarterback, Shedeur’s name started to fade from the conversation.
Despite Sanders slipping further in the draft, the Raiders kept passing on him-this, even though at times it seemed like Sanders was the ideal candidate to develop under Geno Smith. But the Raiders’ front office had other plans.
Tom Brady speaks out on the Shedeur Sanders topic
Various media outlets, especially Skip Bayless, suggested that Tom Brady was the reason the Raiders passed on Sanders. This upset the legendary NFL quarterback.
“I know, well, everyone’s got every… you know…” Brady said. “That’s the problem with media: everyone can just say whatever the (expletive) they want and get away with it. And it’s kind of unfortunate because there actually used to be a lot of integrity in media, and there’s way less now because everyone needs crazy voices to get heard.”
“It probably hurts a lot of relationships, which is not the goal of broadcasting. It should be to develop, cultivate, and solve problems. Rather than just critiques, I want people to offer solutions.”
The reality is that these will always be speculations, and we may never know if Brady actually influenced the Raiders’ decision not to draft Shedeur Sanders. Only time will tell whether Las Vegas made the right choice-or a big mistake.
