Tiger Woods’ vision in jeopardy as Legacy Club project encounters serious setbacks

Tiger Woods has never been one to shy away from ambitious projects, but his latest golf-course design in Los Cabos is proving to be one of his most demanding undertakings yet.

The Legacy Club at Diamante, which is meant to be the jewel of the resort’s portfolio, was supposed to showcase Woods’s architectural style and become a potential PGA Tour venue. Instead, the project has run into mounting setbacks even before its first round is ever played.

Located on the western edge of the sprawling Diamante property, the Legacy Club was planned as both a championship course and the future site of Woods‘ personal residence, positioned beside the 15th fairway.

Excitement ran high at the beginning, especially with Woods and developer Ken Jowdy planning for a 2027 opening. But as delays continue to mount, that timeline grows increasingly unrealistic.

A vision colliding with practical roadblocks

One of the earliest challenges came directly from PGA Tour officials, who expressed reservations about several design features. Woods‘ layout leans on shared fairways, deep-cut bunkers, and intricate green contours, which are elements that reflect his admiration for the Australian Sandbelt.

It’s a style centered on strategy and decision-making rather than strength, aligning with the way Woods played throughout his career.

However, those features create complications for a modern tournament venue. Deep bunkering conflicts with Tour standards, while a merged 9th and 18th green with a single sweeping putting surface raises logistical concerns about pin placements, flow of play, and spectators moving. These design risks, while innovative, have made approval more complex.

Then came the construction problems. Even the choice of turf became a stumbling block when the team had to secure legal approval to plant Zoysia grass, which is not native to Mexico.

After finally receiving the clearance, more setbacks followed. Heavy fall rains washed out parts of the property, including a lake under construction, wiping away months of progress and forcing a full rebuild.

The site’s dual-terrain character, featuring half desert, half vegetated oasis, only increases vulnerability to these types of washouts, raising long-term structural concerns. And with Tour officials visiting during the World Wide Technology Championship, the visible construction lag did little to ease doubts about the course’s readiness.

Adding to the uncertainty, Woods recently underwent lumbar disc surgery, limiting his ability to travel and provide hands-on oversight. That absence slows decision-making at a stage when the project needs rapid progress.
