Tiger Woods’ son Charlie left heartbroken after playoff mishap ends championship hopes

Charlie Woods’ latest attempt to make a deep run in a major junior golf championship ended in heartbreaking fashion after he was eliminated from the U.S. Junior Amateur following a tense playoff at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The 17-year-old golfer, who is the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, continues to attract significant attention every time he steps onto the course.

While being the child of one of golf’s greatest players provides unique opportunities, it also brings intense expectations and constant comparisons that few young athletes experience.

Woods entered this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur among 264 competitors hoping to secure one of the 64 available spots in the match-play bracket. The championship began with two rounds of stroke play, where players had to finish near the top of the leaderboard to continue their pursuit of the title.

After a difficult opening stretch, Woods showed impressive determination to keep his tournament alive. He started six over par after his first five holes but responded with a strong recovery, playing his next 31 holes at one under par.

That comeback placed him at five over for the tournament, leaving him tied with 13 other players for the final two spots available in match play.

The result meant Woods had to compete in a 14-player playoff on Wednesday morning, with only two golfers moving forward.

A playoff setback following an unexpected interruption

Woods began the playoff on the par-5 first hole at Saucon Valley’s Grace Course. He delivered a strong tee shot down the middle of the fairway and had approximately 270 yards remaining for his second shot.

Taking an aggressive approach, he attempted to reach the green but his ball finished short and left in heavy rough.

His third shot failed to reach the putting surface, leaving him with a difficult recovery attempt. His birdie chip rolled beyond the hole, and he eventually settled for a bogey that ended his championship hopes.

The situation became even more frustrating after an unexpected distraction during the hole.

As Woods prepared to play his pitch shot, a photographer captured an image with a camera click occurring during his backswing. The interruption disrupted his concentration, leading Woods to react with a frustrated “Really dude?” after the shot.

Although there’s no guarantee Woods would have converted the save attempt without the distraction, the moment added to the disappointment of an already difficult playoff hole. His bogey was enough to eliminate him, while Eli Wessel, Hudson Kutchma, and Leo Gao advanced after making birdies.

Wessel and Kutchma later earned their match-play places by making pars on the second playoff hole.

Despite the early exit, Woods showed plenty of fight throughout the tournament. His ability to recover from a poor start demonstrated his competitiveness and determination, qualities that will be important as he continues developing his game.

Woods is expected to begin his senior year of high school this fall before joining Florida State’s 2027 recruiting class.

He’ll be part of a talented group that includes top junior golfer Miles Russell, who earned medalist honors at Saucon Valley.
