Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods have never been especially warm toward one another.
Their history is full of sideways comments and the occasional direct shot, including the time Montgomerie suggested Woods should stop showing up for majors.
Hence, hearing Montgomerie praise the idea of Tiger joining the PGA Tour Champions caught some people off guard.
Woods turns 50 next month. That milestone alone opens the door to the senior tour, and naturally the golf world has begun whispering about it.
Notah Begay III hinted Woods should take a look. Davis Love III agreed. Officials inside the Champions Tour practically issued an invitation.
Montgomerie has now added his voice to the mix, offering something that sounded almost enthusiastic.
“I think it would be super for the Champions Tour if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, tv, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not,” he said, as quoted by journalist Garrett Johnston.
For Montgomerie, it’s about as glowing as it gets. But the familiar jab sits right there inside the compliment if he is able to play.
Given Woods‘ long injury list, the remark lands in that gray area between honest and needling, which is very much Monty’s style.
Still, there’s no denying the truth behind the sentiment. Woods joining the Champions Tour, even for a handful of appearances a year, would be a windfall.
Players would watch the leaderboard more closely. Fans who normally skip senior golf might suddenly tune in.

And the setup is friendly to someone in Woods‘ position. Shorter courses. The option to use a cart. A schedule he can pick apart as needed. For a golfer managing dozens of surgeries and limited mobility, it’s a softer path.
Montgomerie, now settled into the Champions Tour routines himself, understands that better than most. Hence the shift from tension to “sure, bring him over.”
Whether Woods actually commits is still completely unknown. He hasn’t shown much appetite for expanding his schedule beyond the majors and a few select events. But as the birthday approaches, the conversation isn’t slowing down.
