Tiger Woods could be preparing for his first return to a golf course since his legal troubles began in March, with the legendary golfer expected to be around Liberty National Golf Club when his foundation’s annual NEXUS Cup gets underway on Monday.
The invitation-only charity event is scheduled for September 14 and 15 in New Jersey and is hosted by Woods as part of the fundraising efforts for the TGR Foundation.
The official NEXUS Cup website confirms that the event brings together 18 amateur foursomes for two days of team competition, with Woods serving as host and making appearances alongside the competitors.
Golf insider TWLEGION has now raised the possibility that Woods could go beyond simply greeting participants and actually hit golf balls during the event.
“The next Tiger Woods appearance could come on Monday when Woods’ foundation is scheduled to kick off its annual NEXUS Cup Charity event from Liberty National GC in New York. Tiger typically gives a clinic and we could very well see him hitting balls.”
That would make the occasion significant even though the NEXUS Cup is not a PGA Tour tournament.
Woods has regularly been involved in clinics and other activities at the event, and the tournament’s format gives invited amateurs the opportunity to interact directly with its famous host.
The setting also has a history of producing memorable Woods moments. Liberty National, overlooking the Manhattan skyline, has previously hosted PGA Tour events and has become closely associated with the NEXUS Cup.
The event’s official website notes that past editions have included special appearances and entertainment, including a 2019 evening featuring Jimmy Fallon and Woods.
Tiger Woods’ legal case changed the direction of his 2026 season
The potential return comes less than two weeks after Woods resolved the legal case stemming from his March 27 crash in Florida.
Woods was arrested after his SUV overturned while he was attempting to pass another vehicle. No one was injured.
Police reported signs of impairment and found two hydrocodone pills in his possession. Woods initially pleaded not guilty and subsequently stepped away from competitive golf while seeking treatment.
Importantly, although the incident began as a DUI case, the most serious DUI charge was ultimately dropped.
On September 2, Woods pleaded no contest to reckless driving and accepted a plea agreement that resulted in a five-year suspension of his driver’s license and approximately $1,500 in fines. He avoided jail time.
The court’s decision followed months of uncertainty about the case. Woods‘ legal team had initially prepared for a more serious proceeding, but prosecutors ultimately determined that proving impairment would be difficult, particularly given his documented medical history and pharmacological tolerance following years of surgeries.
The legal resolution does not, however, automatically mean Woods is ready to return to competitive golf.
His last competitive PGA Tour appearance remains the 2024 Open Championship. Woods has also dealt with a series of significant physical setbacks, most notably the devastating 2021 car crash that resulted in serious injuries to his right leg.
Multiple back operations and subsequent injuries have repeatedly interrupted his attempts to maintain a regular playing schedule.
Yet Woods has built much of his modern reputation around improbable comebacks.
He has 15 major championships, behind only Jack Nicklaus’ record 18, and 82 PGA Tour victories. He also holds the record for the most weeks spent as world No. 1, having occupied the position for 683 weeks.
Woods turned professional in 1996 and became a global sporting phenomenon almost immediately.
His 1997 Masters victory, when he was just 21, established him as a transformative figure in golf, while his dominance over subsequent years changed the commercial and competitive landscape of the sport.
His recent appearances have therefore attracted enormous attention even when they have not been competitive.
Following the resolution of his driving case, Woods was seen at Stanford Stadium watching the Cardinal play Miami. His son, Charlie Woods, was also competing around the same time at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where he finished tied for eighth.
The NEXUS Cup could now provide another milestone.
If Woods does step onto the range at Liberty National and hits shots in front of guests, it would not constitute a competitive comeback. It would, however, offer fans their first meaningful glimpse of his golf swing since the latest chapter of his difficult 2026 season.
That distinction matters. Woods has not confirmed a return to PGA Tour competition, and there is no indication that a NEXUS Cup clinic means he is preparing for an immediate tournament appearance.
Still, after months away from competitive golf, even a few swings from the five-time Masters champion would inevitably prompt questions about what comes next.
At 50, Woods remains one of the biggest names in the sport. The NEXUS Cup is designed primarily to raise money for his foundation, but if he reaches for a club on Monday, attention will inevitably shift toward the possibility of another chapter in one of golf’s greatest comeback stories.
For now, the event offers something much more modest: the possibility of seeing Tiger Woods back on a golf course, club in hand, after an extraordinarily difficult year.
