Tiger Woods plummets to new low that only strengthens calls for him to retire

Tiger Woods‘ storied career appears to be approaching an unavoidable crossroads. Once the dominant force in world golf, the 15-time major champion now faces dropping out of the PGA Tour picture altogether.

In September 2025, Woods made a brief public appearance during an exhibition at Liberty National Golf Club, showcasing a controlled but noticeably cautious swing.

Days later, he confirmed he had undergone his seventh lower-back operation – another in a long series of surgical interventions that have defined the latter stages of his career.

The latest procedure, a lumbar disc replacement, is expected to keep Woods out of competition for at least three to six months.

Given his age – he turns 50 in December – and history of recurring back injuries, medical analysts suggest his recovery could take significantly longer. Even if Woods regains fitness, returning to elite-level competition may prove nearly impossible.

Rankings collapse and retirement talk grows louder

The physical struggles have been mirrored by a steep decline in performance metrics. According to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Woods has now fallen outside the top 2,000 players worldwide.

For an athlete who spent a record 683 weeks as world No. 1, the drop illustrates both the passage of time and the extent of his inactivity. Should he remain absent through early 2026, he risks losing his ranking entirely.

Despite his current standing, Woods remains exempt for three major tournaments next season – the Masters, the PGA Championship, and The Open – owing to his past victories.

These invitations provide him with the opportunity to compete if he chooses, though few expect him to challenge seriously for titles again.

The possibility of transitioning to the PGA Tour Champions, the circuit for players aged 50 and above, has been mentioned frequently by Woods himself. Such a move would allow him to continue competing at a less physically demanding level.

Tiger Woods fans want graceful goodbye

Public sentiment around Woods‘ future reflects both admiration and realism. Reactions on social media following news of his ranking decline ranged from sadness to acceptance.

Some fans urged him to retire gracefully, arguing that his legacy in reshaping golf’s global appeal is secure. Others expressed hope that Woods would recover sufficiently to make occasional appearances, valuing his presence more than his results.

Woods‘ most recent competitive outing came at The Open Championship in July 2024, marking yet another limited season. His last professional victory dates back to the 2019 ZOZO Championship, a reminder of how long it has been since he consistently contended on tour.

Even so, his participation in the upcoming indoor TGL series, where he co-owns the Jupiter Links GC team, ensures he remains visible within the sport in a leadership capacity rather than as an active competitor.
