Tiger Woods is approaching 50: Will he play in the PGA Tour Champions or save himself for The Masters? An analyst weighs in

A golf expert answered questions from Tiger Woods fans about which upcoming tournaments the 49-year-old legend will play. These kinds of questions are usually easy to answer, but this one is different, as it concerns a veteran considered by many to be the greatest of all time, who must carefully plan and manage his final swings.

Since winning the 1997 Masters Tournament, the first of his career, Tiger Woods has amassed 15 majors, making him the second-most successful player of all time, only behind Jack Nicklaus (18). His tally breaks down as follows: 5 Masters titles, 4 PGA Championships, 3 U.S. Opens, and 3 British Opens. His last victory was at Augusta in 2019, where it all began.

Seven back surgeries and an Insperity partnership: The way Tiger Woods gets there

It’s been no less than seven back surgeries. That’s the number Tiger Woods reached on October 10, 2025. Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi performed another procedure: a lumbar disc replacement at the L4/L5 level at the Hospital for special surgery in New York. On November 11, 2025, he appeared at a Bridgestone Golf content session in Florida.

The appearance caught fans off guard. More importantly, keen observers noticed something significant in his wardrobe choices. Every piece of Woods’ clothing featured the Insperity logo prominently on the sleeve. His polo shirt had it. His jacket had it. Insperity isn’t just any sponsor. The company has deep roots in the senior golf industry.

Ryan Lavner talks about Tiger Woods, the PGA Tour Champions, and The Masters

First of all, what is the PGA Tour Champions? It’s a professional men’s golf tour for players over 50, a branch of the PGA Tour, offering high-level competition for golf legends. Now it’s clear why Woods signed with Insperity; he already recognizes himself as a veteran, which would also make sense given his potential participation in the Champions. ‘Tiger’ is currently sidelined with an injury.

were you going to waste the limited number of golf swings and shots you have left?

That’s why the 54-hole format of the senior tour and the advantages of using buggies mean that Woods could very well return to a point where he feels he can compete. However, according to golf analyst Ryan Lavner, Woods’ participation in the senior tour might not be so straightforward. “If you were Woods, were you going to waste the limited number of golf swings and shots you have left? Were you going to spend them in over-50 tournaments, or were you going to try to pull off an incredible feat at the Masters or the Open Championship?”
