Tiger Woods faces uncertain future after 7th back surgery : Will he return to golf?

Jim Furyk is urging Tiger Woods to carefully weigh his next move: with Woods now eligible for PGA Tour Champions, Furyk warns that jumping back into competition could come with more risk than reward, especially following another serious back surgery.

Woods, who turns 50 on December 30, underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery last month in New York, performed by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

It was done at the L4/L5 segment of his spine, after scans showed a collapsed disc, disc fragments, and a compromised spinal canal.

As Woods recovers following such an invasive surgery, he will soon become eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, a move Furyk says could inject huge value into the over-50 circuit, but only if handled with care.

“It’s a lot less taxing on your body … Three-round tournaments,” Furyk told Golf Channel‘s Rex Hoggard, adding that Woods should “dip a toe … come see what it’s about.”

Drawing on his own experience, Furyk recalled balancing PGA Tour and Champions Tour play when he turned 50, and how the senior circuit ultimately won him over.

But on a recent episode of the 5 Clubs Golf Podcast, Furyk admitted whether or not he sees Woods in a captaincy position instead.

“He’s Tiger Woods. I think the opportunity was there in 25. I think, you know, he needs to be able to give 110% to it. It’s an amazing job, but it is very time-consuming.”

Furyk added, “You put a lot of pressure on yourself as a captain. So, if the timing is right for him and it’s something that he wants, I think that opportunity is there.”

Pressure mounts amid concern for Champions Tour’s relevancy

Furyk’s words comes at a moment of real uncertainty for the PGA Tour Champions. Some former PGA pros are sounding alarm bells, warning that without Woods, the tour could struggle to maintain relevance.

On The Wagyu Filet Show, former tour pro Johnson Wagner said, “If Tiger doesn’t play, can it sustain itself on the names that are out there right now? … It was built for Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino.”

At stake, Wagner argues, are not just nostalgia and legacy, but the economics of the tour. TV audiences are reportedly shrinking, and major sponsors are less engaged, according to insiders.

Meanwhile, other voices in golf agree that Woods could serve as a lifeline. Paul Azinger, now an analyst on the Champions circuit, told reporters that Woods’s arrival would bring “global media” attention.

“Then all of a sudden the focus is on this tour … a lot of guys are going to be in shape and ready and try to beat Tiger if they can.”

Yet not everyone sees his entry as an uncomplicated win. According to Tom Pernice Jr. there’s tension around Woods’s shift: “Does the [PGA] Tour want Tiger to stay over there … as opposed to play over here?”
