Tiger Woods can’t catch a break: son Charlie’s success keeps him in the spotlight in the midst of recovery

Tiger Woods may not have teed off in a professional golf event this year, but he’s still finding himself under the spotlight-this time, because of his 16-year-old son, Charlie, who continues marching towards the professional scene.

As Tiger continues to recover from a string of injuries, Charlie’s recent success in competitive golf is ensuring the Woods name remains front and center in the sport despite the success of the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

The teenager secured his first American Junior Golf Association title at the Team TaylorMade Invitational with a commanding performance, finishing 15-under-par across three rounds (70, 65, 66).

Taking home the trophy is good, but what he seemed to like the most is the fact that he now gets some of the family bragging rights after being put under pressure from his father as he develops.

“Now I can say I have one, and Dad can’t say I don’t,” Charlie quipped after the victory, showing off a touch of his personality with the light-hearted joke.

Charlie shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round of the Florida Amateur, tying for 39th place and trailing the leaders by eight strokes. He was set to tee off early Friday morning in hopes of gaining ground.

Tiger reappears in the public eye

Meanwhile Tiger is currently away from the professional scene due to ongoing recovery from back surgery in September 2024, which was followed by a ruptured Achilles tendon that further delayed his return to golf.

“I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab,” Woods wrote on X.com, formerly Twitter, announcing the news. His surgeon, Dr. Charlton Stucken, confirmed that a full recovery is expected.

And Charlie’s recent success hasn’t just made headlines-it’s also brought Tiger back into view, a significant development for the 49-year-old, suggesting he is well on the mend as he was spotted trailing the group in a golf cart at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens.

Notably, Woods appeared without a cast or walking boot, an encouraging sign at the Florida Amateur Championship for fans following his recovery.

Though sidelined from competition, Tiger continues to play an active role in his son’s development.

From partnering with Charlie at the 2024 PNC Championship-where they finished runner-up-to showing up at high school events and junior tournaments, Tiger remains an engaged and present figure in Charlie’s journey.

He has also been visible in his daughter Sam‘s life, attending her high school soccer championship and graduation earlier this year. She’s set to attend Stanford University, following in her father’s academic and athletic footsteps.

Woods is not expected to hit the golf green again until sometime in early 2026, around the time of the Genesis Invitational, which means he will miss the upcoming US Open (June 12-15) and most likely the British Open (July 17-20).
