Three great gifts the New Yotk Mets could ask for this Christmas

We’re confident New York Mets fans have no desire to repeat the rollercoaster they endured in 2025 MLB season, a year that’s finally coming to an end. And it’s fair to say this Mets roster looks completely different after letting go of key pieces like Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz.

Three great gifts the New Yotk Mets could ask for this Christmas

Those two high-profile departures are joined by players like Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil. On the flip side, the Mets have brought in Marcus Semien, Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams, and Luke Weaver – but there’s still a long road ahead to round out this revamped Mets roster for the 2026 MLB season.

And since it’s the holiday season, here are three perfect “gifts” that should top the Mets offseason wish list.

A Frontline Starter

The Mets can feel good about the future with rookie Nolan McLean, but putting too much pressure on him could be risky. Adding an elite starting pitcher to the rotation would significantly boost their World Series aspirations.

In this market, the organization has shown interest in Nick Pivetta while thinking big with high-profile names like Tarik Skubal or Freddy Peralta – though acquiring either would likely require surrendering top prospects, something they’re reluctant to do.

MLB free agency offers other strong options like Framber Valdez, Ranger Suárez, or Zac Gallen, presenting a chance to sign one to a short-term contract.

An Outfield Upgrade

With Brandon Nimmo heading to the Texas Rangers, the Mets have a clear hole in left field. Center field could also use reinforcement, and they’ve expressed interest in Luis Robert Jr..

Beyond Robert, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports the Mets have held talks with right fielder Austin Hays.

Why not aim higher? Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger remain available in MLB free agency – and with Steve Cohen‘s financial backing, the Mets absolutely should pursue one of these star outfielders.

High-End Bullpen Depth

In the Mets bullpen, the team has already taken big steps by adding Devin Williams as their new closer and Luke Weaver in a key setup role. They’re also expecting A.J. Minter back from injury and have reliable lefty Brooks Raley for high-leverage situations.

Still, losing Edwin Díaz – considered by many the best closer in baseball – left a massive void, and the bullpen rebuild is far from complete. Relief pitching depth remains an urgent need.

MLB free agents like Andrew Chafin, Danny Coulombe, Pierce Johnson, Seranthony Domínguez, Michael Kopech, Kirby Yates, and Hunter Harvey would all fit well in New York – bringing experience, stability, and bullpen versatility to a relief corps still searching for its identity.
