Saul “Canelo” Alvarez not only lost to Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, he also came under fire from one of his most persistent critics: Oscar de la Hoya. Despite having promised to “leave behind” his dispute with the Mexican, the president of Golden Boy Promotions took advantage of the result to launch a series of sarcastic and scathing comments.
The historic rivalry between the two added a new chapter after the fight on September 13. In an Instagram live and in his segment called Thursday Clapback, De la Hoya celebrated Crawford’s performance and did not hold back when talking about the Mexican:
It was like taking candy from a baby. He just toyed with Canelo, made him look like a fool… It looked like he was throwing punches in the air. What was that?
Why does Oscar de la Hoya keep attacking Canelo on social media?
Oscar De La Hoya did not miss the opportunity to stress that he predicted the outcome of the fight, saying that Canelo would look slow and predictable: “I told you his feet would be stuck to the ground… and they were”. He even reviewed the Mexican’s career, minimizing his achievements: “The only good boxers he fought were Mayweather, Bivol and Crawford… and they all played with him”
The criticism did not stop there, in a mocking tone, De la Hoya said that Saul Alvarez “was always a failure”, while praising Terence Crawford for his ability to adapt and dominate a higher category: “He went up three divisions and had a beautiful fight,” he said, placing the American above the Mexican in current boxing.
De la Hoya also lashed out at Dana White and the organization of the event
The former Olympic medalist also hit out at Dana White, who staged his first boxing card in collaboration with Netflix. “Dana didn’t have his best week, his shirt was shrinking every minute,” De la Hoya quipped. “He showed up at the beginning of the event watching UFC on his phone. Will he regret leaving the UFC for a sport that doesn’t want him?” he added harshly.
The promoter also accused White of wanting to amend the Muhammad Ali Act to benefit his company: “TKO needs to change it so they can screw the fighters”. The attack was direct and made it clear that the Golden Boy promoter not only has a score to settle with Canelo, but also with those who dare to tread the boxing ground without prior experience.
