They leave the Yankees empty-handed: Eugenio Suarez prefers another team

Eugenio Suarez, one of the most sought-after third basemen in MLB, was finally acquired by the Seattle Mariners in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving the New York Yankees out of the fight to sign him. The Venezuelan, known for his power at the plate and experience, returns to a team where he already played a few seasons ago.

Suarez arrives to strengthen the Mariners’ offense just before the trade deadline, while the Yankees are left without a key piece to bolster their infield. The transaction is pending medical review, but represents a strategic move for Seattle in search of a playoff spot.

Seattle Mariners strengthen third base with Eugenio Suarez

The Mariners acquired Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks in exchange for prospect Tyler Locklear and two right-handed pitchers, Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos. Suarez, 34, is having one of his best seasons with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs, numbers that put him among the league leaders in offensive power.

This return to Seattle is key for the team, which is currently battling for the lead in the American League West Division. In addition to his power, Suarez brings experience and leadership to a lineup that is looking to consolidate itself for the final stretch of the season.

Why were the Yankees left out of the race for Eugenio Suarez?

Despite the Yankees’ interest, they failed to convince Eugenio to join their roster. Sources close to the situation say the player preferred the offer and role offered by the Mariners, with whom he already has a good relationship and where he sees more stability for his immediate future.

This outcome represents a setback for New York, which was hoping to shore up third base to offset the offensive inconsistency that has marked its season. The refusal of Suarez forces the Yankees to look for other alternatives to strengthen their roster.

With this acquisition, Seattle sends a clear message to its division rivals and increases its chances of fighting for a postseason spot. Now it’s up to the third baseman to continue to prove why he is one of the most valuable and sought-after players in MLB in this 2025 season.
