With less than a week to go before the MLB trade deadline, the New York Yankees have stepped on the gas to strengthen their hitting and defensive ability in the outfield, now that Aaron Judge is on the injured list. However, a rumor has caused a stir in the Big Apple where the Bronx Bombers have grabbed the attention. Although the price is reportedly “high”, MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees have been in contact with the Pittsburgh Pirates about one of their stars.
The Bronx outfit is interested in 26-year-old center fielder Oneil Cruz, who is tied for the Major League lead with 33 steals, and has also hit 16 home runs so far this season. The Dominican recently participated in the Home Run Derby in Atlanta where he was one of the semifinalists and provided a great show in the first round. However, what will the New York Yankees have to do to bring him into their ranks?

Among the latest rumors and news from the trade deadline, in an outside view at Yankee Stadium, there does not appear to be a clear spot for Oneil Cruz with the Bronx infield. His position is covered by Cody Bellinger, who is the starting center fielder and Anthony Volpe is entrenched at shortstop, Cruz’s former position. The Caribbean native would certainly add a power/speed dimension to New York’s lineup as they chase the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.
That said, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that“while the Pirates will listen, they are not prioritizing such a move,” echoing Heyman’s report, “it seems that Pittsburgh would have to be absolutely shocked by an offer.” It’s no surprise that a player with Oneil Cruz’s talent is receiving a lot of interest in the trade market. In addition to the Yankees, many teams have contacted the Pirates about Cruz.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand also reported that several teams have contacted the Pittsburgh Pirates management about Oneil Cruz’s contract. There is a phrase that says “listening is free” so they will only pay attention to offers, but a trade is unlikely. However, the New York Yankees will have to put a check with many zeros on the table, or a trade of several players for the services of Oneil Cruz.
