The Yankees give a minor league contract to a former Dodgers pitcher they could make the most of

In the final stretch of the 2025 MLB season, the New York Yankees continue to adjust their roster in the hope of bolstering their pitching staff. The organization’s latest move was the signing of veteran Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda, who arrives on a minor league contract in search of a new opportunity in MLB.

Although not a high-profile signing, the move is noteworthy because of Maeda‘s name and track record, having shone with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins. Now, the Yankees hope that this experienced arm can give them depth in a rotation that has suffered from injuries and irregularity.

LAPRESSE

Who is Kenta Maeda and what is his MLB history?

  • Kenta Maeda arrived in the Major Leagues in 2016 from the Japanese League (NPB), where he was a star with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. From his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Maeda showed a great ability to pitch with control and keep games close. His technical style, with a wide repertoire of pitches, allowed him to excel as both a starter and a reliever.
  • One of the highlights of his career came in the 2020 season, playing for the Minnesota Twins. In that campaign, shortened due to COVID-19, he posted an outstanding 2.70 ERA in 11 starts, with 80 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 66.2 innings. This earned him recognition as the runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award, behind only Shane Bieber.

Kenta Maeda and his declining stats, but with room to surprise

In the last two seasons, Kenta Maeda has struggled to maintain his level. After signing with the Detroit Tigers, his performance has been inconsistent. In the current 2025 season, he has made just seven appearances, posting a high ERA of 7.88, with eight strikeouts and six walks in just eight innings pitched.

Despite those numbers, the Yankees see potential in the Japanese right-hander, trusting that his experience and technique can contribute, especially if he adapts to the team’s minor league development program.

What are the Yankees looking for with Kenta Maeda?

For the Yankees, this type of signing represents a low-risk, high-reward gamble. If Maeda can regain some of his past form, he could become a useful piece if needed in the rotation or bullpen. The organization has dealt with several injuries during the season, so having experienced arms available is always an advantage.

For now, Maeda will begin his stint with the Yankees at their minor league affiliates, where he will look for rhythm and consistency. It has not been confirmed if the plan is to promote him to the main team, but if he shows good performance, he will likely get his chance.

A new era for Kenta Maeda

What stands out in Maeda’s story is not only his talent, but also his determination to stay relevant. At 37 years of age, many would think of retirement or a transition away from professional baseball. However, Maeda insists on his desire to compete at the highest level, and his arrival with the Yankees represents a new opportunity to prove that he can still contribute on the diamond.

While it is difficult to predict Kenta Maeda’s future with the Yankees, history has shown that some minor league contracts can turn into great redemption stories. With the depth of talent demanded by a long and demanding season, any reliable arm can make a difference.
