The Yankees’ future depends on what happens with Cody Bellinger

TheNew York Yankees‘ planning is at a critical juncture, with the potential re-signing of Cody Bellinger positioned as the most influential decision in shaping the team. For analysts, securing the left-handed outfielder’s stay would be the “cleanest” and most efficient move to build a contending roster. His departure, on the other hand, would force a complicated outlook in the market.

Bellinger, whose contract is projected to be around six years and $180 million, not only offers defensive versatility, but his left-handed bat provides the protection and lineup depth that Aaron Judge so desperately needs.

Yankees’ concern about Bellinger’s future

The real concern for the Yankees is the possibility that Bellinger will sign with another team. If that happens, it is almost certain that the team would also be out of the running for Kyle Tucker, the other big free agent whose market value is estimated to be even higher than Judge’s historic deal ($360 million).

The remaining alternatives are limited. While the youth route, with Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones, is a possibility, manager Aaron Boone has expressed his intention to keep Dominguez in left field. In addition, relying on rookies would mean taking on other problems such as inexperience, a risk the team may not be able to afford in Aaron Judge’s prime.

Yankees target Edwin Diaz to bolster bullpen

While the Yankees remain concerned about Bellinger’s situation, they also know they must move in other areas and already have a name fixed as an option for the bullpen.

It would be Edwin Diaz, one of the most dominant players in his position in MLB in recent years, who decided to opt out of his contract with the Mets, so he would be a good option to reinforce the Yankees.

Diaz has established himself as one of the best, with a 1.63 ERA and 2.28 FIP in 66.1 innings pitched during his best campaign. The Puerto Rican is a good option for a Yankees team that is already working against the clock to improve its roster.
