A lot has changed since Corey Seager seemed destined to land with the New York Yankees heading into the 2022 season – even Jeff Passan was among those who pointed to the Yankees as the favorite to sign the star shortstop. At the time, shortstop was a glaring need, and Seager, as an elite player, looked like the perfect fit for the storied franchise.

Now, the possibility of acquiring Seager could still be alive for the Yankees, though the Texas Rangers organization has not made any public statement and has not indicated they are willing to trade him. However, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers have been listening to offers, and the Yankees are one of the teams that have checked in.
“According to two people with knowledge of the conversations, several deep-pocketed teams, including the Boston Red Sox, have noted the Rangers’ financial approach to the winter and have expressed interest in Seager this offseason,” Grant wrote. “While the Rangers have noted the interest and haven’t explicitly said he’s unavailable, they haven’t engaged in deeper discussions. Other teams that have inquired include Atlanta and the New York Yankees.”
One of the biggest concerns with Seager is that he hasn’t played more than 140 games since 2022 (when he appeared in 151). Injuries have limited him throughout his career, as everyone knows. Yet even in just 102 games this year, Seager posted 4 WAR (per FanGraphs), hitting .271/.373/.487 with 21 home runs and 50 RBIs.
This could be exactly the offensive and defensive answer to one of the Yankees’ biggest needs – especially remembering that Anthony Volpe lost confidence and didn’t live up to the expectations of the shortstop position in New York.
We’ll see if the Yankees decide to make this major move – especially considering that Volpe will miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
